Edge 520 reverts to wrong activity profile

I've just set up my new Edge 520 and kept the three default Activity Profiles of 'Race', Indoor' and 'Train' (and they're in that order in the list). So far, I've only used the 520 in 'Train' mode, but every time I power it off and back on again, it changes to 'Race' and I have to change it back to 'Train'. Surely this isn't the intended behaviour. Is there a preference somewhere that is making 'Race' the default profile?

Thanks in advance,

  • The unit should retain the active profile when it is powered cycled. If it is not then something is not being maintained in memory correctly.

To fix it you will need to clear and reload the memory.

This will clear you settings so you should back them up if you would like to restore them.

Copy the contents of the following folders to your PC

    Garmin\Locations
    Garmin\Sports
    Garmin\Settings
    Garmin\Total
    Garmin\Records

    Prompted non-vol clear

    • Turn device off
    • Hold the Down key while powering on the device
    • Continue holding the down key until the “Factory Reset” prompt appears
    • Select OK to clear

After it is reset copy all the files you saved to the Garmin\NewFiles folder on the Edge.
  • Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions and it seems to have fixed the problem, so thanks.

However, I had set up several pages of custom data fields in the 'Train' profile and they've all disappeared and I'm back to the defaults. These are under 'Settings' on the device, but they weren't restored by putting the original 'Settings' file back in place.

EDIT: I just noticed those profiles are in 'Sports' and not 'Settings', but I replaced that, too, so the situation is still the same.

I seem to have lost my sensor and Bluetooth pairings as well. Is this to be expected?

  • That is strange. If you still have files you backed-up try putting then in the Garmin\NewFiles again.

Hmmm. I replied to this yesterday but my reply hasn't appeared. I said that it was my fault. I didn't read your instructions closely enough, and I replaced the files into their original locations rather than the "new files" folder, though I don't see why this wouldn't work also. By the time you replied, I had already set it up again and I didn't want to mess with it.

However, I just tried something else: I want to set up in the first page of the "Indoor" profile the same as the "Train" profile, so I copied the 'Sports' folder to my desktop, renamed "CyclingTrain" to "CyclingIndoor" and then placed it in the "New Files" folder, expecting that the "Indoor" profile would now be the same as the "Train" one. However, it didn't work and "Indoor" still has the default values.

    Thanks again,

  • Renaming the activity profile file will not work as the name is an attribute inside the file and is not taken from the physical file name. I did a posting on how to clone a an activity profile a long time ago. Let me see if I can find it.

The activity profiles are cached in memory. If you copy them directly to the sports folder then you are bypassing the caching process. If you place them in the NewFiles folder then the edge will process them. Move them to correct location and cache them in memory.
  • Great, I'll try that.

    Thanks again,
