Slow turn by turn notification with 520 and RWGPS?

I frequently seem to get notice of turns on my 520 when i'm right on top of the intersection, despite setting the RWGPS TCX export to 50 meters. seems to occur even in strong GPS areas where I'd think the 520 would know my precise location. is there a way to improve performance to get more notice of turns. (I have GPS and GLONASS turned on).

better mapping app for turn notice than RWGPS?? or a better way to use RWGPS to get the result i'm looking for?

on a related subject is there a way to freeze the turn notices until after the turn is made? I like to keep my eyes on the road for obvious reasons, but secondarily like to avoid missing turns when leading a group of 20 fast cyclists. (and yes, my audible alerts are turned off because I cannot hear the frequency emitted by Garmin devices....very annoying.... I've submitted requests for hi/low tone alarm, but apparently this too has fallen upon deaf ears :))

thanks
  • Sorry to disapoint you, but this issue has been discussed quite a lot in this forum regarding the 520, and It just doesn't have the accuracy to do that. The GPS/Glossnas chipset is just too cheap/lacks accuracy to show your current location with accuracy. The 520 needs to have lots of position samples to "smooth" out the inaccuracy, and consequently it's current position indicator is about 50m behind at 30kmph. There's lots of other indicators of this. Fx. The current gradient number is always about 50 - 80m behind (it shows the gradient 50-80m ago). Also if you take a short ride and criss-cross forward in a wide pattern, you'll notice the recorded track is almost 100% straight due to smoothing.

So, you're out of luck. You'll need a bigger or older model to have more precision. I have learned to live with it, but it does require you to spend much more time looking at the screen to anticipate the turns. I can recommend using the "distance to course point" indicator and then always subtract 50m from the show number in your head. But it does force you to look at the screen FAR too much.

Yeah, my 500 and 520 are equally accurate. Not sure what the issue is with yours. I think the issue is how fast the gps and the underlying system update. If you're going fast 50m isn't going to be enough leeway. I set mine to 120m so I've got time to start looking.
  • ill try 120m before turn

    thanks,

i'll try the 120m setting before the turn and see how this works out.

Is it just notification or is your actual maps slow to update? I have seen the later depending on SW version. Seems to be something Garmin fixes one release and then breaks again in another. I just downgraded from 6.20 back to 6.00 due to this issue.
  • can you guys try creating the course using http://www.gpsies.com

see if it makes any different.
  • Try this

    This fix worked for me....

    Copied from here;

There's currently a bug with the time in the exported .tcx file from RideWithGps. Open the .tcx in "Windows Notepad" editor before loading it into the Garmin.

A few lines down you will see a field called TotalTimeSeconds. This is the estimated time for how long the route will take to travel in seconds. Change this number to a time (in seconds) that will take longer than the actual route. The easiest way to do this is by adding a 0 to the end of the existing number. If you were to do the route in four hours for example you would enter 14400 (four hours in seconds).

Save the .tcx file, and then with the Garmin Edge 520 in mass storage mode connected to your computer copy - paste the .tcx file into \Garmin\NewFiles. Unplug the Garmin and it will automatically create a new course that will be available to select and ride.

I've noticed the 520 needs another 30m or more Notify before turn? when exporting from RWGPS too, nothing to do with RWGPS as far as I can tell, 510 is OK. If you want another notification at the turn you could try Training > Courses > Course Options > Turn Guidance > Enable. This is a Garmin guess and may not be what you want, I have it turned off, but it does display for a while longer. Unlike RWGPS, Bike Route Toaster adds another cue before the turn, but if the 520 is slow it will probably display after the turn. This might still be what you want, at least the cues are where you place them in the file. I haven't been able to get my routes in or out of BRT lately, haven't tested.
