Problem with elevation and gradient reading

Former Member
Former Member
Hi,
Since the latest firmware update (6.20), I have the following problem: the gradient is completely wrong. For example; I'm riding a 12% slope (according to the sign post..) and the 520 displays -1%. Of course, at the end of the ride, the elevation is completely off, too. For example, 170m instead of 600m (compared with a Polar v650). If I use "altitude correction" in garmin connect, the correct altitude is thus displayed.

It is something that happens one ride out of ten, approximately.

Did anyone has the issue? Any help welcome.

Thanks.

My guess is that the firmware upgrade was just a coincidence. It might be something blocking the pressure port inlet. The 520 has problems in the rain with the port getting blocked. If rain isn't the likely cause see if there might be something partially blocking the hole. Call support if it isn't because of rain and it continues to happen.

Thanks for your reply. Now that you mention it, it was raining when it happened. I'll check the port the next time.

Gradient and elevation problems with Garmin 520

I have exactly the same problem. Gradients frequently show as negative when riding uphill and vice versa. Even allowing for a time delay for the calculation, they seem to be wrong a lot of the time. Also, after a ride when I compare the elevation profile from the Garmin 520 to that generated from the same route created in Map My Ride (which presumably uses GPS data for elevation), as well as my own knowledge of where gradients are on frequently used routes, the Garmin elevation profile is mostly incorrect and often by a wide margin.

Yes, rain is a massive issue with 520 pressure port inlet.

Bit crap really. Still use my 500 sometimes and swear it is as good if not better at all the important things.

I've had good results with making a rain canopy using Gorilla and duck tape.

    I started a thread here.
