Edge 520 Heart Rate not displayed

Just bought an Edge 520 with HR bundle.
I'm a beginner to Garmin and not finding the set up too easy! I have got the sensors connected and configured the display in RIDE to show HR but there are no numbers in the HR box. What am I doing wrong?

Partly fixed

Kick started the HR monitor on my wife! now it's working but reading high. Will try with some conductive gel.

I've not managed to configure the display to show the heart rate. I don't understand what to do. Also, I don't really want any activity profiles other than cycling, I'm not really sure what the point of activity profiles is. But if someone could at least show me how to get the display to show heart rate whilst I am riding that would be great as that's what I bought it for. When I have had a combined cycling computer/heart rate monitor in the past both of them have showed the heart rate without any problems.
