How to train/setup for intervals

Hey guys,
i allready came a long way using my garmin. I now wanted to start Interval training.

I Created a workout via garmin connect.

Example:

Warmup: Heartrate Zone 2

-----
Interval: 4 min - Power Zone 4

Rest: 2 min (Zone 2)
---- repeat 6 times ---

Cool Down

My problem is, that the garmins keeps flashing "power to high/low" every time i dont hit Zone 4. and as power is fluctuating a lot, its almost all the time + Plus is hard to find the right power, without seeing actual power, just "to/low or high" Can i disable the message? or get a less filling/annoying version of it.

Greetings
  • You cannot disable the message, but for power I would recommend using either the 3 or 10 second average power option in the workout definition rather than 1 second power as this will smooth out the spikes and rips and will reduce the number of warning messages.

3 secs would already be very helpful, but i cant find the setting? oO is it in the garmin or garmin connect?

And most important, thank you alan you're once again a life saver:)
  • It should be offered in Garmin Connect when authoring the workout, but it could be missing. Let me check.
  • Well that is a pain. The UI in Garmin Connect does not appear to allow you to select 3, 10 or 30 second power.

So basically trainings with a target Are useless?;)

Is really no one using the function? Or which work arounds do you guys use?

I use it on a regular basis, but I dont set a "Wattage" in terms of a single number, rather a range eg 140-150W

Maybe its because ive got a stages, but even if i use power zones. which have quit a big interval, its hard for me to hit it every time. Its even harder to hit 200-240 whats, if youve got full screen to low message, covering the actual wattage.
  • Let me do some research. I know I have seen some third party workout editors.

Some Edge models such as the Edge 1000 allow workouts to be created/edited on the unit and they do surface the use of power zones using 1, 3, 10 or 30 second average power.

I think that the old Garmin Training Center PC product might do it.

Yes you can, I did exactly this yesterday.

I was doing short intervals of 30 sec and if you went over /under at the end of an interval you'd miss when to change to the next effort. So I just turned off the alerts
  • I have never used the power zones or alerts w/the 520. However, I do train w/power and do intervals using power. When doing intervals outside, this is what works for me...

3s power fluctuates too much for me. I have it displayed, but it's not really meaningful. I use 10s power which fluctuates much less so along with lap avg power. Shortly after starting the interval, I want my lap avg power to be my target power. The idea is to keep it around the target power for the duration of the interval. It should not fluctuate much. I use the 10s power to make sure I stay around my target power w/out falling off too much or going too hard.

Since you're using zones, I would suggest you just pick a wattage in the middle of your target zone. If you end up over/under a bit, no big deal. For example, 5x10min at 280W... You end up with 275, 285, 290, 276, 278. I say you met your goals, did your work, got your training stimulus. Seriously, is that really any better or worse than say 280, 280, 280, 280, 280??
