Another Navigation post...

I have a Garmin Edge 520 firmware 6
Base Map has been replaced with the Open Street Map.

I am experimenting with the course / map function of the 520 trying to understand what settings do what.

These two options appear to do the same function - display the 'Riding North' or 'Riding East' which is quite useless information really
Menu > Training > Courses > Course Options > 'Turn Guidance'
Menu > Settings > Activity Profiles > Map > 'Guide Text'

This setting displays the cue information from a TCX file for example 'Turn Left' or 'Turn Right' which is quite useful
Menu > Training > Courses > 'Course Name' > Settings > 'Course Points'

Menu > Training > Courses > 'Course Name' > Settings > 'Color' = Influences the colour of the course when 'always display' is set to 'on'
This option would have been good whilst navigating a course as the line to follow is not very clear

I have a bunch of courses created in Garmin Connect but this does not give me a cue sheet which is the only useful function in combination with using maps.

I have the free account with Ride With GPS to create the TCX and also with BikeRouteToaster however this appears not to work anymore.

What do other people use for creating courses? And do you export as TCX or GPX?
  • The "guide text" setting controls wheather the "useless" go east etc text is displayed or not.

The "turn guidance" controls wheather the 520 will generate the turn by turn warnings from the supplied gpx or tcx file.

    I would turn both off

There are some past discussions about gpx vs tcx but as all I want is the breadcrumb route displayed on the map I just use gpx

I used Ride with GPS for years but switched over to plot a route. I like their plotting and editing tools better. Some of the features you have to pay for on RWGPS are free on plot a route like turn notifications in advance of a turn using TCX. Give it a try:

  • All I would like really is the bread crumb trail to follow with it overlaid on the map.
To get this from a TCX I have to turn course prompts off and always display the route then I can change the colour of the route to something with more contrast
Should I use GPX and select Ride instead?

I might do some experimenting over the weekend.
It useful to know how other people use the Garmin for navigating!

I'll give plot a route a try! Thanks!

The only difference between tcx and gpx is that tcx adds course points.

Not all route planners and course points to the tcx file.

Try turning "off course warnings" on.

Do you just set your desired route to 'always display' and follow this on the map without loading the course and selecting 'Ride'

I wish there is an option to customise the colour of the route when the course is being navigated. The edges of the road are just bold black for me.
  • I follow the course and you can change the colour of the course ....well you used to ?
