Turn off automatic firmware updates?

Is there a way to turn off the automatic firmware updates?

I know I could just not pair the device with my phone but then I lose live tracking (which my wife really likes so she knows where to look for me if I never come home from a ride). I'd also have to uninstall Garmin Express and just upload .fit files to connect and strava.

I would like the ability to choose when to update the firmware since each time there is a firmware update things are broken or need some workaround. I'd prefer to not be sorting that stuff out either right before I am leaving the house or already on a ride.

I'd like to go back to version 5.20 but I think it will just automatically download and install 5.30.

sorry, you can't. I asked Garmin support the same, as their half assed tested releases break perfectly working computers. Their response was to never connect it to anything again ever..

    Well, not anymore ;-)

You'll be happy with your brand new 5.30 firmware, as this last firmware adds this new fonction :

Changed software updates to require accepting a prompt on the Edge 520 to install. Updates on the device will not automatically install. Please note that this change will affect installing the next update, not this one.

So, in the future, it won't be automatic updates. But for that, you must keep the 5.30 firmware on your Edge 520. If you try to revert to an older firmware (don't know if it is possible ? Should be...), then it will be automatically upgraded to 5.30 !
  • That is great news - drove me nuts as it would update while riding.

That is great news as it would update while I was riding, I would look down and notice the Edge had stopped recording because it was restarted.

Also found a kludge that will prevent updates. I installed a 91mb map file, so there's only about 12mb free on the Garmin. When Garmin Connect tries to update, it reports "insufficient space," and no update. You of course have to delete the map file before you can update again. Good to know that after v. 5.30 this auto update behavior ends. I was trying to downgrade to 520, and it would spontaneously upgrade me again. I'll keep the large map file on the Garmin anyway, since I want it to use, but this way I can also be sure it can't decide to upgrade on its own. I can't imagine why I'd need an update so urgently that I need it to happen over the air on the road, rather than waiting till I get home and can do it at my computer.

Upgrading without asking for permission is a serious design flaw, and doing it while riding is inexcusable.
  • This is the most useful suggestion to fill the remaining space with garbage to prevent upgrading. Thanks!

Was promoted on the device to update when going form 5.3 to 6.0, so I think they have now addressed the issue - at least until they break it with another poorly QA'd release in the future.
