Edge 520 doesn't calculate Vo2 Max nor FTP

Hi,

Did my first ride with the Edge 520 and a Vector 2 S. Got HR and power data for the entire ride but the Edge doesn't give me Vo2 max or FTP numbers in stats. It says to go ride with a power meter for at least 20 min, despite having ridden 120km... What gives? The only thing that may be it is that I used the HR band of my 920xt. Could that be it?
  • The 520 will not report an FTP value unless you do the FTP test, but is should have given you a value for VO2. Is the recovery advisor enable?

Any Garmin HRM strap should provide the information need to get a VO2 value.

Could you post the activity file?

    Files Attached!

    Hi,

    Files attached!

Additional question - perhaps related... The status screen of my Edge keeps saying under the Powermeter - connected line: "calibrate...". I calibrated a number of times at the beginning and in the middle so I am assuming it says this to let you know this is where the calibration option is, OR it can be that the Edge doesn't remember it being calibrated. The on screen instructions said all the time "Calibration Successful" but there was no OK field to click. I could just use the back arrow...

    Recovery advisor worked normally indeed.

    Thanks

    Sven
  • The "Calibration" option on the status page is there as shortcut so that you can quickly get to it. It does not indicate whether the power meter has recently been calibrated or not. The calibration offset is stored on the power meter and not the Edge. That way the power meter is ending corrected values and it does not require the head unit to apply a correction.
  • Let me look at the data, it could be that you did not reach a high enough % of your stated max HR the Edge to be able to determine a VO2 value.

I see that you have the Max HR set to 185 BPM. Is that correct?

Good pointer on the calibration question. Great!

As for the Vo2 Max, I biked for 4h and there were some pretty steep hills where I pushed 500W so it should be enough to get an initial reading. Right now it just acts as if I haven't biked with a power meter, saying "bike 20min with a power meter to get a Vo2 Max" so something is wrong here...
  • I don't see anything obviously wrong. Try one more ride and if you don't get a value after that I would recommend contacting Garmin support.

I had the same issue... with the difference that times ago my Edge updated the VO2max from time to time depend on the training.... but after the Update to FW 5.20 i received no update even i had really hard workouts....

Actually i´m in Southern France and i had several rides with different intensity and lenght but still no update. Two days ago i made a factory reset - so all my data was lost and i have to start from scratch with all the annoying stuff like sensor pairing, datafield setup etc.... BUT at the end after a 60km ride the Edge displayed me a new VO2max... Yeah - Mission completed....

So maybe a factory reset is the solution...not pretty but it may help...

    Cheers...
  • Before trying a factory reset could you post the Garmin\Settings\settings.fit file and the activity profile that you used for that ride? I will see if there is anything there that might indicate why you did not get a VO2 value.

The activity profile is contained in the Garmin\Sports folder.

Mine is brand new and came with the 5.2 software. Not sure a factory reset would help but will try... "good" to hear I am not the only one with the issue, I guess...
