Can I update the Firmware manually, via Filesystem?

I'm a linux user, and I don't have a Windows or Mac computer I can install the Garmin firmware update software on.

Is there a way I can update my Garmin 520 to the new 4.10 firmware manually, maybe by copying the file to the right folder on the 520 via USB? This is how I updated the firmware on my Garmin 500.
As I understand, once I have 4.10, future updates will happen over Bluetooth, so this is the only time I should have to do this manual update.

Also, how/where can I get that firmware file?
I can't find a firmware download link on the website. It just sends me off to install Garmin Express.
  • Yes you can. Go to this site and get the build you want for your unit. http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/

Rename the file to gupdate.gcd and place it in the Garmin folder on the Edge. The Edge will then do the update when it restarts after being disconnected from the PC.
  • Thanks, Alan. That worked perfectly.

Who owns that site? Is it trustworthy?
  • I have had no problems with the data on the site.

The list (via https://forums.garmin.com/newreply.php?p=815688&noquote=1 ) at http://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/recent-updates and http://whiter.brinkster.net/generated/LatestGarminFirmwares.html points directly to Garmin servers.

Some report that you need to place gupdate.gcd in /Garmin/NewFiles but mine eventually worked fine in /Garmin/ itself. You shouldn't need to unplug after clicking unmount in your system - the unit should either boot up by itself or will respond to the power button. At that point it will auto-update and switch off again. *Then* you can unplug and turn it on and it'll be running the new firmware.

I have the Garmin Edge 520 and run linux (Ubuntu 14.04) - I jumped straight from 2.30 to 5.20 updating by this method. I did also eventually do a factory reset after the unit seemed to keep deleting gupdate.gcd on boot, so I'm not sure if that helped things along.
  • It's supposed to work that way. As the name implies, gupdate.gcd is an update file. Once it's been used, it's no longer needed, so the device deletes it. If gupdate.gcd doesn't disappear, then something is wrong.

    Hello people
I bought my Garmin Edge 200 on a Chinese website and it came with the TWN version. I downloaded the multilingual version and put the renamed file for gupdate in the Garmin folder but the upgrade process never progresses. Any idea if I'm doing it wrong? I would like to put Portuguese language. Thank you

Unfortunately, if you bought a APAC version of any Garmin's device, you won't be able to install the software that had Portuguese or other nom APAC language. In other words, only the APAC version of the software works on the APAC version of the hardware. =/
  • Thank you aweatherall

    Garmin Express just stuck
