Anyone gone from a 1000 to 520?

I'm thinking of replacing my edge 1000 for a 520. Has anyone else done so? I understand that the features that are different are the routing and wifi on the 1000, but the 520 has vo2 max. Anything I'm missing?

The 520 has no touch screen which is the most think I'm missing. I came from 1 510.

I think that's it - Touchscreen, WiFi and routing

For me it's the perfect device, small, simple and buttons far easier to use that touch screen with gloves on. I managed to change a data field easily mid ride and scrolling pages on my 510 was always hit and miss, so I prefer the 520.

The only thing I'd like to be able to do is pan maps. You can zoom, with a few clicks but a way to pan would be perfect.

  • I use 520

    Hi,
Well i own both but i mostly use the 520 now.

The biggest disadvantage of the 520 is that it doesn't have a touch screen which makes switching screens while riding not as easy as on the 1000. (The Up, Down Buttons need to be pressed pretty hard).
The pre-installed Map is a joke, totally useless. You can download maps and install them but the 520 has limited storage capacity.

I never use maps so its not an issue for me. I like that its smaller and really handy. The battery life time is much better as on the 1000. With the 1000 i lose about 11% Battery within an hour. With the 520 its like 4-5%.

    Cheers

I bought an Edge 520 for my daughter but use the Edge 1000 myself.

I've used it a few times setting it up for her.

I liked the small size but I'm 51 and the larger screen on the 1000 is easier for me to read.

In use the touch screen isn't missed too much but it does make set-up easier.

If you have a power meter the calibration is a little slower with the button presses instead of the touch screen (I'm guessing you do or the VO2 Max would be irrelevant).

The VO2 Max will eventually be on the Edge 1000 anyways.
  • For the price its a nice unit. Buttons are a pain to operate, and 1000 has better mapping, and routing on the fly. I'm in mid 50s and don't mind the small screen.

    Take away message:

1000 is better if the price is not an issue, correct?

    Thanks

This is interesting because for me the 1000 battery life is a major drawback, if I go for a long ride with all sensors connected including power meter (but no routing) it does not last longer than 5 hours 30. External battery is not always an option. In this case I also have an 920XT that I start when I see the 1000 alarm for low battery and then at home I combine the fit files... this is a real PITA. As I am not using routing anyway, I may switch to the 520 then.
