Strava live segments - leaderboard default selection / goal

Former Member
Former Member
Hi - I have live segments working (unlike many it seems!). I understand how to change the 'leaderboard' of each individual segment, but is there a way to change the default so that the goal / leaderboard for ALL live segments is the KOM time, rather than my PR, or something else? I can do a multiple edit, but this is just to bulk enable / disable, not edit!

When I am riding and come up to a segment, it says whether I am in front or behind, but I have no idea what I am being compared against.. (it doesn't indicate on the screen at any point, unless I missed something? (possibly!)).

Help appreciated, thanks.

anyone can help ? i need the solution too
  • When you are riding a segment the text at the top of the map page should show the target time you are chasing and who owns that time or if it is a Goal or KoM.

The default leaderboard order should be the following unless Strava has made some recent changes.

There is no way to globally change the order. The only workaround would be to create a goal time in Stava that matches your PR then that time will be first.

    • Goal
    • Rival
    • PR
    • KoM/QoM
  • It would be great if when selecting the 'rival' (person ahead of you on the leaderboard) it selected by gender, or at least gave you the option. If the woman just ahead of me is faster than, say, 3 guys between us, its her time I'd like to see.
  • The leader board content is generated by Strava. It would be better to post the suggestion to them.
  • I'll also recommend setting a goal time to do what you want.

I want my PR to be the time I chase on a segment so I set a goal time equal to my PR with a goal date a long way into the future so the 520 defaults to that when I start a starred segment. It is much easier to manage as it is done through the web interface of Strava rather than changing the settings all the time on my 520.

On the Edge 520 there is an option under Strava Live Segments menu to change the priority for that segment by setting your PR as a goal. It's a real pain to have to do this individually but hey ho.

What's not clear to me is once you do this what happens when you beat your Goal (PR). Does the order revert to the default order or does the goal remain set as your PR which just gets faster every time you beat the record?

I guess I'm going to have to go and try it to find out unless anyone can answer.

It would make so much more sense to be able to set this globally.
  • If you change the order on the 520 you have to check each segment every time you sync as it changes the order if a someone you're following does a faster time on that segment.

Setting goals in Strava is a lot easier than messing around with settings on the 520. Once you set a goal it doesn't change unless you change it and the leader board list doesn't change either, regardless of what the people you're following do because the goal time is always top priority.

When you beat your goal time in Strava, you are notified on the activity details. Then it is simply a matter of going into your list of segments and setting a new goal. I like to give myself plenty of time to achieve them. I only set goals so it comes up against my time, not someone else's.
  • Incredible

its incredible we can't choose all segments in the unit and set our PR as Goal. we must choose it one by one and this is eternal. Why can we one by one and no editing the all segments?. incredible.
  • Feature request??

Is there somewhere we can post this as a feature request? I'm really not interested in chasing the times of my "rivals"; I want the default to be my PR for every segment. Surely it can't be that hard to add a menu option at Training -> Segments -> Segment Options called something like "Set Default Goal" so that it can be changed between Strava Goal, Rival, PR and KOM/QOM?

It's a real faff to have to do this one segment at a time or on the fly.
  • Know what you mean. On the FR735, generally for running ones I would prefer the default target to be the record (as usually have a chance) but on cycling ones PR is better for me as the KOM is sometimes a pro rider in a peloton in a race or some other very very difficult target.

Generally though if you have a decent number of followers and they run/ride similar places to you the person one ahead of you ought to give a pretty decent target.

Normally if I am doing a run/ride targetting segments will look at each one anyway to remind myself of the required effort and to check it is actually loaded (and does not overlap any other one so will actually trigger) and that is a good opportunity just to "fix" a few that has a target that you don't want.
