New Course using a .GPX file

Hi,

I downloaded a course to ride with the 520 from a local site.

The course was in .GPX format. I followed the advice on the site and placed the .GPX file on the Garmin\NewFiles folder and the course was transferred flawlessly to the 520. I rode the course and everything went fine.

The problem is that the only place the course appears now is on the 520. I can't see or edit the course on Garmin Connect. Any idea why? I thought maybe to load the course directly to GC but there is no option to upload a file.

Any suggestions?

my understanding is it must go to Garmin Connect first? Then onto your device via various methods.
But for the life of me I can t get GPX, TCX or FIT uploaded via manual load to Garmin Connect. I am on a mac, so dunno if thats why?

On Garmin Connect\Courses as far as I checked, there is no way to upload a course, just create one.

Anybody knows how to see the courses on the 520 on Garmin Connect in order to see it, edit it, etc... ?

If you can upload any files I mentioned then it should come up as an activity. Then I think from that activity you can make a course on Garmin connect.
My problem is I cant upload manually. Maybe try a test on one of your old activities already logged on GC?

It IS possible to create a course out of an activity... but you can do that ONLY AFTER riding that course...

I would like to load a course in GPX format or similar prior to riding it, edit it etc...

  • Garmin Connect is designed with a one way flow for courses, from GC to your device. You can create a course on GC either from an activity or through the route planning tools.

You can upload activities to GC, but not courses that you have on your Edge from other sources.

You can however get a course from another source in to GC, but you may consider that the effort in doing so is too much in comparison to just building the course there.

What you need to do is take the course you have from another source and run it through a tool that will convert it from a course to an activity.
You can then upload this fake activity to GC using the import option from the activity listing in GC.
In GC you then open this fake activity and use the option to build a course from it.
You can then treat this newly created course like any other course that was built directly in GC.

There are a number of different tools that can read in a course file in and export it as an activity. One example is listed below.
