520 completely dead

I've had my 520 for a couple months and has worked pretty well. In the middle of a ride today it started beeping repeatedly that I was off-segment - then stopped beeping and everything was ok except I got no love segments the rest of the ride. Got home and it synced fine to Strava. Turned the 520 off and went on with my day.

Now a few hours later I'm trying to turn it on and it's completely unresponsive. I plugged it in and it shows nothing - no evidence even that it's accepting a charge. Have tried some of the reboot procedures I've read and still nothing. This thing appears completely dead.

Help!!

I had a similar episode. Try holding the power button down for 15 seconds.
  • You could try

    Force to Mass Storage:

    • Power the device off
    • Press and hold the lap button while plugging in the cable USB that is attached to the computer
    • Wait 10 seconds and device should go to mass storage

520 completely dead - the 15 second reboot worked

So the 15 second reboot worked as suggested above. I'm still at a loss why the sudden change in operational behaviour.

Once I completed that, and powered and got it into ride mode I plugged it back into my mac and Garmin Connect recognised it. I wonder if something changed when Garmin released the news version of Express the other day?
  • I've just experienced a similar problem. Yesterday the Edge 520 head unit started beeping and flashing some sort of error message after I commenced a ride. I ignored the message hoping it would go away but alas the unit eventually went dead! I am using the unit with speed, cadence and heart rate sensors. Everything is brand new (2 weeks old) and the battery fully charged.

Unfortunately as I'm long sighted and don't wear prescription glasses for riding, I couldn't read the exact message on the head unit, but I assumed it was that the battery was low. To record the remainder of my ride I switched to the Strava App on my iPhone. When I got home and recharged via the USB I did indeed find the battery was at 0%.

HOWEVER, this morning the exact same thing happened even though the unit was charged 100% - ie, error code started flashing and the unit beeping every 10 seconds or so ??? Its very disconcerting when this occurs mid ride and you think you are going to lose all your data.

Unfortunately, sitting with the unit at home with glasses on so I can write down the error message it is difficult to recreate the problem. The error only seems to come up when actually riding / moving? Spinning the back wheel by hand doesn't recreate the problem.

I've searched through all the user manuals and online forums and I can't see any list of error codes that might explain what is occurring. Thankfully today was just a recovery ride for me so nothing much lost except some fat burning Ks. But I really need to know what is going on so I can use the Edge 520 every ride without any hassles. I'll be dropping by the shop where I purchased my unit to see if you have any ideas but its quite frustrating when I can't use a near $AUD 500 device as intended. It needs to be working for tomorrow!
