Where do I set wheel circumference?

The manual has a table of tyre sizes and corresponding wheel circumferences, but nowhere does it note where you can enter that info. Nor is there a data field to be found anywhere in the convoluted depths of the menus.

(And no, I'm not going to use GPS mileage. That is way to unprecise.)

And BTW Garmin:

PEOPLE USE THESE DEVICES TO KEEP TRACK OF THE MILEAGE OF THEIR BIKES, E.G. FOR MAINTENANCE INFORMATION. DROPPING ODOMETER CAPABILITY IS A MAJOR NUISANCE.
  • Once you have the speed sensor enabled, you need to find it and press the enter button. You'll first have to change the setting from auto to manual, then change (if necessary) the wheel size.

BTW I don't care about the bike odometer as I use either Garmin Connect or Strava to keep track of my bike mileage. In Strava, I can also keep track of component mileage (like the cassette or chain). If you've ever switched head units often as I have (500, 510, now 520), it's much easier to keep track of mileage off the head unit. I would imagine that's why GC started tracking bike mileage. Unfortunately, GC doesn't rack component usage.
  • Thanks

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately there is no hint whatsoever that this will be possible when connected to the sensor. I like to do my setup in my warm, cosy house at this time of the year...

And, sorry, Strava is no option for me. Basically I commute and want to kepp track of my fitness. And GC is way to flaky to trust it with any data I really want to record. I bought the device to more or less use it standalone. It's a really sorry state that it can't perform a function any 20$ speedo has. The fuction was buried deep in the statistics on the 500, but at least it was there. I expected the 520 to build up on the 500. Obviously I was wrong.

I'ts a pity , really, because this time they at least got the usage profiles right.

OK, I just went into my garage where my bike is on my trainer. Turned everything on and pedaled around a bit to enable all the sensors.

    Settings
    Sensors
--> Pick your speed sensor here
    Sensor Details
    Wheel Size
    Manual
--> Set your wheel size here

The default for a 700 is 2096 and I've found that works for 99% of the wheels I have.
  • Why don't you use garmin connect to keep track of bikes and milage. I have 3 bikes on there and find it easy to joggLe between them after uploading activity.

Having come from 510 to 520 i find it easier that bike connects to sensors automatically without having to change bike on garmin edge.
  • Sorry missed post about not liking garmin connect. I have to say I don't find it flaky at all

Why not strava? Privacy zone your home and workplace, and then mark private (or set autoprivate if that is still possible) and there you go. And it is free if you don't want to pay.

Currently there is an issue with edits to activities not propagating through to reports. If there is deal breaker on a storage application it is that it stores wrong data and doesn't allow correction. Which this bug is.

And it is about as flaky as any Garmin product. Express updates every two weeks or so. And after a year still has the issue of constantly crashing on a Mac if left running through sleep phases, needing manual killing of the two processes. Base maps on the Edge 520 contain map data that is completely fictional. (That coming from a company that is rooted in navigation systems. I can accept there being only major routes stored. those running kilometers from their real location und making nodes that are not real is unacceptable.)

I know that that 520 is the last product I bought from this company.

@Sathor: I am on too many databases already where I am the product sold.

With GC you can select more than one piece of gear so you should be able to add "drivetrain components" as an additional gear item and add it to activities and track it's mileage.
  • Why not just let the 520 set the circumference? It calibrates the number with the GPS distance. How accurately do you need to know distance anyways? It's not a particularly useful number for tracking training.
