Edge 520 won't update

When I connect my Garmin to Garmin Express, I get a message that I need to update the software on the Edge 520. However, when I try to do that, I keep getting a message that the update fails, and that update doesn't fit on the internal memory. I've deleted the 15 or so activity files, and the language files, but it doesn't help. Any ideas on what I need to do to get the update to work? How do I check how much memory is available on the Edge?

Thanks.

You can see how much free space you have available in your file explorer when the Edge is connected.

Are you a mac users? If so, don't forget to empty the trash to really free up the space of deleted files.

Have you downloaded a new map? It may be significantly bigger than the original, so it's worth taking a copy and removing it form the edge and trying the update again (after emptying the trash if on a mac).
  • +1 for maps.
Had same issue when installed big map (90+ MB)
Remove the maps, put back the original one, make an update and then install your map

I did install a new map, but that file is fairly small -- 19MB, covering my neck of the woods in detail--much smaller than the file it came with. I do have a MAC, but I can't figure out how to see how much free memory there is on the Garmin. It should be quite a bit, I think.

19Mb is not large, you should have enough room for the update as long as you have emptied your trash.
  • +1 on maps. Had an 83MB local area map file in there and replaced it with original 50MB base map and update went fine, but not enough room left after update to swap the old 83MB map back in so I'll have to create a smaller one for the local area.

I was getting a message with GarminConnect saying there was not enough space on my device to update the software. Chatted with Garmin support and two things helped me free up space.

I connected my Edge 520 to my computer via USB

    1) Using the finder/file explorer, I located an old software update on my Edge 520 in the folder RemoteSW. The filename ended in ".GCD" and was over 500kb. Garmin support said to put that file in the trash.

    2) Next, Garmin support suggested that I remove any unneeded language files from the Text folder. There were a dozen or so language files I didn't need (Croatian, Czech ...), each was over 520kb. I moved those to the trash.

    3) I emptied the trash and then started the SW update again using Garmin Connect and it completed successfully.

This could be simpler and easier than removing map files and then reinstalling them after the update.
