FTP test workout details / steps?

Can anyone direct me (or provide) the details of the Edge520 FTP test workout (i.e. the steps it makes you do such as: warm up 5 mins 50% FTP, 1 min sprint, 2 min 100%, 5 min 50%, 20 min test, 5 min cooldown, etc.)?

I've been searching but can't find it anywhere.

Reason being I'd like to try it out but want to be able to plan the location for the sustained effort portion in an area free of traffic/lights etc. without the Edge prompting me to start the test on my way over there in city traffic.

Thanks
  • Not yet... But start the Edge as usual at home, and start a new activity once you get to the desired "test field".

Ok, but does it have a warm up/openers phase, or does it go right into the test? I'm just looking for a "precis" of how the test is conducted so I can plan the workout efficiently.

Or maybe it's just a "vapourware" function and I'll run a manual FTP test per my existing protocol (as I have done all along).

It would be nice since it's an advertised "feature" to see how Garmin's test is conducted/compares to the various testing protocols out there. Is it 20 mins? 30? 1 hour? There is no documentation that I can find other than "Look! The 520 can run an FTP test!"

    (sorry for the cynicism)
  • You can quite easily just run through the steps while just holding the unit to see what they are. No need to go for a ride to find out what they are.

    Enter target goal (watts)
Step 1: Warm up for 20 minutes
    Step 2: 5 minutes at Zone 6
    Step 3: 10 minutes at Zone 2
    Step 4: 20 minute test
    Step 5: 10 minutes Zone 2
Step 6: Cool down until you hit the lap button

Step 6: Cool down until you hit the lap button

It would be nice if it said "Cool down until you hit the lap button." But that is not what it says.

It said something like "Cool down until lap reset key."

I rode for almost 10 minutes waiting for the lap to end. When it was not happening, I thought about hitting that button that I had never used before.

It didn't occur to me that "key" meant "button." I thought key meant it would play a sound when the lap naturally ended.

Also, whenever my power was too high or low, the 520 would black out the screen and say "Power too low." There was no way for me to see my power since it blacked out the entire screen, which was unnerving. I think they should just put that message at the bottom, as they do when the power goes back within range.

Is the target goal entry only for calculating the various zone wattages during the test? I assume it has no impact on the FTP calculation. . .seems you would enter your previous FTP if known?

I don't think the target will effect the calculations - just the prompts for what it is reminding you to try for.
