Insufficient Space on 520 to update

Hey everyone,

I noticed that there is now v3.0 software available for the 520 which fixes quite a few of the bugs so I decided to try the update but whenever I do I get a message from Garmin express saying there is insufficient space on the Garmin 520 to update and please contact garmin support.

I thought initially this might be because I installed a better base map on the device to give some mapping so I removed that (40 mb) to guarantee there would be enough space but I still can not update. After this I tried to force reset/factory reset to restore the device to original state but I am still getting this error and it won't let me update to the latest software OR reinstall by base map!

Has anyone else encountered this problem and does anyone have a fix for this?

Cheers,

Tom
  • How much space is free on your device? And if you use a mac, have you emptied the trash?
  • mine updated no probs on my mac, I had a 60mb ism basemap installed, which I didn't bother removing.
Have you taken off any courses training or activities you no longer need? (...and emptied the trash..)

I had this same issue and initially thought the same as you that it was the replacement maps causing the issue. I went to replace with the original maps and noticed that the original maps are even bigger. Someone suggested around the same time I thought of it that I should delete some activities and then try again. That worked. I deleted all my activities then tried again and it worked fine.
  • I got this warning initially. I backed up my custom map (90mb), deleted it and emptied the trash as I'm on a Mac, and was able to update after that. You can try deleting activities if you have a lot, and also restarting everything (computer, device, Garmin connect) per standard de-bugging procedures.
