EDGE 520 and SPORTTRACKS

Just done 3 rides with the 520, and very pleased with it "on the bike".
But have had 2 out of 3 rides with problems when imported into SportTracks, it is as if I had "a million pauses" during the ride... Thus it cuts several minutes and gives a way to high average speed. I do have autopause on at 3 km/h , but there is no false pausing when riding, and the timing in GC and Strava is as close to one another and the Edge as it can be.....
  • Sounds like a problem with the SportTracks importer. I would guess that you are using "Smart Recording" and it is treating the fact that data recording rate is variable as pauses. If I'm correct then switching to use 1 second recording would fix the issue, but it might be better to post on the SportTracks forum if they have one.
  • Using 1 second as with my prevoius Edge 800...... during the last year more or less. Before that "smart recording" without any problems.

Just E-mail their support, they are super quick to respond and very open for helping us users - I had a small issue yesterday and they got back to me in 30 min :-D

I hanen't had any problems importing the 520 into SportTracks. If you want to post one the fit files or pm a link, I could see what happens when I load it to my ST. Do you have an import plugin? Although it doesn't make sense that a plugin would have a problem with a 520 file either.
  • I'm somehow unable to upload anything.... You'll find the activities here:

    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/915212852 ("bad")
    https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/911081947 ("ok")

and maybe you can download the fit files from those.

In SportTracks when selecting "the pencil" at the Data selector in the "Resume" ("Overview" in english ? ) the timing becomes correct in figures, but the graph for speed is still much to "optimistic". (+ ~3 km/h)
  • Check to make sure you haven't set a "stopped speed" on your cycling category, which will post-process your workout within the software to auto-detect stops along your path.

View > Categories > Cycling > Stopped Speed

You can clear the stopped speed, or set it to zero so that the numbers are presented as recorded without any stop processing.

I see a problem in the file. Position points are repeated from one record to the next even when moving at speed. That results in the speed going to zero for a second. I found one of my 520 rides has the same problem.

Here is a screen grab from the Fit File Repair Tool of NGHPMC’s bad file. You can see the speed drop to zero 5 times in the 22 second period shown.
. Edit: that is for speed derived from GPS data which is what Sport Tracks uses. GC uses distance from the wheel sensor.

NGHPMC was anything different between the rides? Bluetooth, following course, etc.

For my one bad ride I was following a course. But there are other rides where I was following the course without the pauses. I think I had bluetooth on for one ride. I don’t if it was the bad ride but that possibly could be the difference.
  • Thanks for using your time on this.

I haven't been following a course on any ride with the 520, and the all settings where the same for both the linked activities.

Somehow glad you have experienced the same problem at one occasion, but it doesn't give any explanation as far I understand.

Just upgraded to the 3.0 software today, and will do a ride or 2 in the weekend and will report back if the problem persists or don't.

I've been using SportTracks and Garmin devices since the late Edge 305, 705 & 800, but never seen this before :-) / :-(

a work around.... see the track from the "bad" ride here, and notice the huge amounts of pauses...

  • Well both weekend rides without problems as described.... hopefully it'll stay that way :-)
