Bluetooth LE pairing issues with iOS 9 (BLE_Edge 520 won't pair)

I have an iPhone 6 running iOS 9 (13A344) I've been able to pair the regular bluetooth on my Edge 520 (software ver 2.30), so the device shows up in Garmin Connect and I can sync workouts. I have not been able to get the device to pair with the BLE_Edge 520 profile to enable call/text notifications. I have tried deleting the Edge profile in my bluetooth list, deleting the Garmin connect app, restarting both devices, and re-pairing. I have also tried some variations on those steps, all to no avail. I can get the basic pairing to work everytime, but I always get a 'connection took too long' error when I try to pair my device with the BLE_Edge 520 profile.

Any suggestions?
  • I recently had my iPhone 6 swapped out by Apple and after a restore of the new iPhone, had the exact same problem as you.

The only thing that worked for me was the nuclear option: resetting the 520 to factory defaults. After that I had no issues pairing both BT and BTLE.

I just got my 520 and all BE hooked up without an issue. My phone is running iOS 9.0.1

try this out for iOS BLE pairing

Hey guys ! i had the same problem with a 5C and my brand new Edge 520, the problem is that you need to launch the garmin connect iOS app the first time of bluetooth pairing, you have to add your new Edge 520 to garmin connect mobile (the phone app) in order to be able to use BLE, if your E520 display's Searching at the status page try to (re)pair your E520 by deactivating BLE and bluetooth options on the Edge 520 and get the phone to forget the two devices Edge 520 et Edge_520_BLE before you restart pairing...

i'm not fan of the nuclear option since you loose what the device has learned from your workouts : max HR, FTP, VO2Max, Recovery Advisor, etc.

I hope this can yelp you out !

I have ios 9 on a 6+. I found the best thing to do make sure phone and edge are connecting first then open the GCM to connect thought its not instantaneous

Spoke to Garmin. Its an Apple issue. They will update the GC app.

So the app on the phone forwards text messages? Or the software on the Garmin 520 will need to be updated?

I wasn't having any issues on iOS9 with my 5S, but I couldn't get my 6S with iOS 9.0.1 to connect to BLE today.

Same with me. It worked perfectly with IOS 9.0.1 on my 5s but not on the 6S. Garmin said its an iPhone issue and they need to update the Garmin Connect App. Not sure the mechanics of how it works but clearly the App has something to do with it.

Same issue here. I was able to pair BLE_Edge_520 on my iPhone 6 but this does not work on iPhone 6s. I keep getting this error:

    Pairing Unsuccessful
Pairing took too long. Make sure "BLE_Edge_520" is turned on, in range, and is ready to pair.

I suspect the iPhone 6s issue may be due to the version of BTLE. In iPhone 6s, it's version 4.2. In my iPhone 6 (bought a year ago), it is version 4.0. It may take a firmware update on the 520 to fix this issue.

I am all ears if anyone can figure this out. BT pairs fine and I can sync workouts. When I try to sync BTLE, pairing is unsuccessful, with a timing out message.
For anyone that has succeeded pairing BTLE, is it worth it? Do Text messages and Caller Recognition of incoming calls display on the 520?
