Courses and Garmin Segments - Off Course

Hey everyone,

First poster. I'm kind of new to the bike GPS thing as I only owned a 200 for about a month and traded in for a 520 a few weeks ago. I have no idea why I waited so long to get a GPS on the bike - it has really helped bring new energy to the sport for me.

But I am having a problem with my 520. I have set up a few courses on the computer and synced them to the 520 without issue. I will pull up the course and ride it against my target, the 520 tracks me wonderfully, and I upload my ride. Then I go look at it on the Connect website some time later and it lets me know that I passed some Garmin Segments so I take note of that because now I want to beat those times! However, when I go to do the same ride again and pull the course up on the 520, the 520 tells me that I'm off course at the end of the segment and I have a h3ll of a time getting the course to restart during the ride (and then I lose all my progress against the virtual trainer).

The 520 seems to know that the segment is coming up during my ride because it will have the distance tracker for the segment and the finish of the course. It'll beep to let me know that I am 500 ft from the start of the segment and it will beep and tell me "GO" at the start line. Once I pass that finish line, the 520 tells me I'm off course and I just have to abandon the course and reload it.

What am I doing wrong here?

I had the same thing happen to me today. I was using the 520 for the first time on a regular ride. I was not following a course. The unit alerted me that a starred segment was coming up. I got the "GO" alert and I went. I was probably about 150 ft. from the end of the segment when I got the "Off Course" alert. I also happened to me a second time in a different location.
  • Where are you getting the course file from? If you are following a course the Edge should not find or report any segments unless they are built in to the course file.

Can't help but I had a similar issue today on my 520 but I didn't have a course loaded. I don't think the issue has to do with the course file. I was just on a ride and it started beeping like mad. Really annoying. I didn't want to stop my ride for a computer. But the glances I took were telling me I was off segment.
It was only the second time I used the device. First time was on the exact same ride 2 days before. Which I recorded and uploaded to strava. I don't have strava premium so I don't think I should be getting live segment updates.

I built the course on a pc. I wasn't aware of any of the segments until I rode these courses once.

But I'm sitting on my phone here and checking the Garmin Connect app and I can see the segment listed on this course.
  • Did you build the course using Garmin Connect and then download the course to the 520 via the Garmin Mobile app or Garmin Express?

If you have not selected to use Strava segments then courses exported from Garmin Connect will contain Garmin segments that the course runs over.

    Hey AWEATHERALL

I have transferred courses both over USB line from Garmin Connect Web portal (that opens Garmin express) or over Bluetooth using the app. Both ways have left me off course after a Garmin segment and having to reset the course losing progress to my virtual partner. These are Garmin segments, not Strava - I have not explored Strava yet.

Would it help if I grabbed the course off my 520 and tried to post it?
  • Used my 520 for first time today and loaded strava segments via iphone connect app. enabled some segments to test. There were a couple where during the segment I moved over to the "white line" on the road so cars had better opportunity to pass and that was enough to throw me off segment but the 520 did not get back on track so the tracking was cancelled the rest of the segment. Annoying. Is there a way to increase the range of following a segment? Fortunately is does not mess up the upload and connect to Strava but the two off segment occurrences seems very sensitive.
  • What build were you using? Build 3.00 that came out today increases the distance you need to be off segment before it reports that you are off segment.
