Work Around for lost settings issues with 2.5

Many of you have been experiencing problems with the Edge 25 not remembering settings when the unit is powered down. I too have had this problem. I have spoken with customer service (if you could call it that) on two occasions as well as had a few email exchanges. Basically they are sticking their heads in the mud. While they won't say they don't have a problem they will not give an estimated time for the fix. It really ticks me off, I am sure that Garmin did not wait to get paid for their product from their dealers and as far as I am concerned this is just plain complete incompetence on Gramin's part.

I have been able to develop a work around that forces the unit to read the your last set of settings created in Garmin Connect. This will allow the unit to Boot up remembering the settings that were made in Garmin Connect. This did work for my unit and I would be interested if it works for others.

Step 1) Open Garmin Express and connect your Edge 25 device to the USB cable
Step 2) Confirm the Edge 25 shows up as connected in Garmin Express
Step 3) Click on the Tools button and open the menu.
Step 4) you should notice 3 tabs above the text "optional updates" Click on Garmin Connect. Do not Click on Garmin connect from the front page as there appears to be two versions of connect.(Ill explain if anyone really cares)
Step 5) click edit profile
Step 6) just to the left of the CONNECT banner at the top of the page is a pull down menu with 3 horizontal lines. Use the pull down menu and double click on the word device. This should open up a screen to allow you to program your preferred setting. Make sure that you see buttons for Auto Lap and Lap key. If they do not show up the other version of connect has launched (probably 2.3s version but I have not confirmed this yet)
Step 7) Set up you preferred setting the way you would like. I have only been having my ride setting forgotten but I would do all three pages. Make sure you hit the save button.
Step 8) on the left tool bar there should be a button with the number 3 in it, this is the sync button. Sync your Edge 25.
Step 9) After the Sync process is complete open windows file explorer and find find your Edge 25 in the tree. It should show up as a drive letter and and Say Garmin Edge 25. Open the Garmin Folder and you should find several sub folders. Open The NEWFILES folder. You should three files. These are actually the files that were sent over from connect. Control Click all three files and highlight them. Right click on the files and open the properties menu. Change the attributes to read only for all three files.

Step 10) This should complete the operation you can now remove the edge 25 from the USB cable. Turn the unit off and back on and confirm that the settings are remembered.

I am interested to know if this works. One thing, You will need to change the attributes back to none or remove these files in order to change further setting. But at least it makes the thing work a bit easier.\\

    Hey NR6Q
I’ve tested your workaround (Edge 25/Mac OSX Yosemite) and it worked so far.
... but the the bluetooth still need to set off manually.

Hopefully Garmin will release an update soon.

    Thanks

    Bluetooth

    ndugu,

Yes it is unfortunate that I could not get the bluetooth.

What is really sad is that their own stinking engineers cant figure this stuff out.

I know what is going on with the product and could probably fix it if I had the source code.

The one thing that I am afraid of is they may have an issue with eprom size that manifested itself when they added the new features in 2.5 or some other hardware issue they do not want to confirm. Although I think it is a simple firmware issue.

How is the Cadence sensor working? Does it pair up every time?

    Hey NR6Q
I have no additional sensor to pair via bluetooth.
So mi iPhone would be the only one. In my case
this issue is not too bad at all, because my tours
are normally around 1—2 hours and the battery
    drain isn’t a problem.

But yes - i like the the device (form/funtction) so
far and if the «stinking» ;-) engineers can fix this,
it would be perfekt for me.

If it will help for your further «investigations» I
can check, if the edge always pair with my phone.

  • Works, and a bonus

... Page 2 can be setup with 3 fields. No HR still, but at least it's a start. Settings remain after power cycling.

    Finally fixed?

The 2.60 update seems to fix the problems of the settings not being saved. It completely clobbers all of your settings, you basically have to configure it from scratch after the update, but I can confirm that it saves the Bluetooth setting through a power cycle. The getting time from GPS seems to be a new feature, but you can skip it if you right arrow through it.

Hopefully this takes care of all of the settings being preserved, and doesn't introduce any new problems.
