How to edit total distance - using totals.FIT-file of Edge 25

Hi!

After the update to 2.7 I lost the total distance on my Edge 25. So I edited the TOTALS.FIT file, using 2 ways:

1. downloading the tool from http://fitfilerepairtool.info/ Actually it works but to save my changes I would need to buy a license. That´s why I tried no. 2...

2. using http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/ Uploading and converting my FIT-file, changing total distance and time, upoading again and getting a new FIT-file. So fare everything fine. But now I got the proble.

How can I transfer the new totals.fit file to my Edge 25? I know from a couple of other threads for Edge 800 oder 500 or 1000 it works just by placing the file in the "new files" directory. But with the Edge 25 it doesn´t work.

Does anyone have experience with that?

Thanks and best regards!
  • Just did the same for my Edge Touring Plus using procedure nr. 2. Had to puzzle where to edit the data and in which format they are.
Renamed the returned fixed .fit file to Totals.fit and replaced the existing Totals.fit file on the Touring with the new one.
Because you succeeded to copy the Totals.fit file from your Edge 25 it seems obvious how to replace that file - just put it back in the ..\Garmin\Totals folder.
  • Thanks but that doesn´t help at all ... I asked for EDGE 25!

Of course you can put back the fit-file per drag&drop but it does not change anything when you turn on the device! The Edge 25 must safe its data in a kind of back-up.
  • Using an Apple? You have to empty trash too.

Also worth reading thread 'Odometer' in the Edge 1000 forum: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?131727-Odometer
Note: The author of the Fit-file Repair Tool advises to put back the repaired (edited) Totals.fit file in the Newfiles folder and NOT directly back in the Totals folder. This in contrary to what I suggested, which however proofed to work for the Edge Touring.

PS. Please don't scream to me, just trying to help you.
  • I tried that, too, but no success, unfortunately.

Anyway I changed to the Edge 810. And there it is quite easy to edit the over-all-kilometers... :)
  • Thats's the ultimate best reason to switch to a new device...

Hehe :D Wasn´t the only reason. Missed the routing function ON the device to much. But it has a great size, that´s awesome!
  • Fellow Garmin sufferers, upon receipt my new Garmin Edge Explore showed an odometer reading of 44,158 km. This must have included the distance for shipping it to Canada since my total cycling distance with this device is 1188 km.
After getting a useless response from Garmin support I scoured the internet for .fit file edit tools and found this free Dutch site: http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/
You can find a file on your Garmin called totals.fit in a folder called TOTALS. Use the kiesewetter site to convert to CSV format so that you can edit on your computer.
Then you can use any text editor to view and modify the file.
The second to last line in my file attached started with the word data and the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] data field is the odometer reading in 1/1000 of km.
After modifying the file you must save it to the NEWFILES folder. When you power your device off and on it resets totals to the field you revised.
My odometer reading was the 4th field in the line shown below, now edited to 1188 km.
    data,2,408133,1188000,99364,,0,49,2,97
  • Because your Edge is brand new and you have not made rides with it, just discard the file Totals.fit from ..\garmin\Totals. At next power-on a new empty Totals.fit will be generated automatically.
  • very helpful, many thanks
