Assistance - "Failed to send message."

I recently purchased an Edge 130. One of the features that attracted me was the 'Get Assistance' feature, should I ever need help out on a ride. However, I have tested it a few times and, as far as I can see, it doesn't work. Every time I tried, the device tries to send for a while, then shows 'Failed to send message.'

The phone (an original iPhone SE) is connected at the time, running Garmin Connect, and LiveTrack is functioning. I am running the latest Edge 130 firmware (3.60).

Is there any way of getting this working?

Kind regards

  • I have a similar problem, but it does not work to send all messages, as I have a connected phone.

I have the same message 'Failed to send message.'

    Iphone SE.

  • Interesting that we have the same phone -- I wonder if the issue is specific to iPhone SEs or iPhones more generally?

I've experimented a bit and found that I can get this feature to work. The problem seemed to be that one of my emergency contacts had a lot of data fields in their contact details. By created a new contact with just a name and a mobile phone number and pointing Garmin Connect at this new contact, I found it worked. So that is what I recommend if you are having problems with this feature -- create a very simple contact especially for Garmin Connect.

Also worth noting is that emergency assistance messages from the Edge 130 only get sent as text messages, NOT emails. There is some confusion about this from Garmin -- whilst the Edge 130 Owner's Manual correctly states that 'Assistance' sends an 'automated text message', in Garmin Connect it states that 'Incident Detection' (which is where you do the configuration for this feature) sends 'via text message and email'. But don't expect any emails, just texts.

    Kind regards
