Which would YOU buy out of Edge 130 and Edge 520?

I've been following the Edge 130 forum for a while as I quite like the 'small and simple' form factor. Currently using an Edge 25 which I really like.
Browsing around Amazon.co.uk I see that the Edge 130 is £145 and the Edge 520 is £150.
Is the 520 a significantly better piece of kit?

My concerns about the Edge 130 are battery duration and cold weather performance (as reported recently in this forum).

If you were in the market for a £150ish bike computer, which would you buy?
  • Now that Edge 520 plus has support for Galileo, I would choose 520 plus. The screen is a bit larger and it has mapping. However the latter is not really needed for me. Also I don't think it supports bluetooth sensors which the 130 does. But the 520 may have more data fields available like for example the temperature field.

However I suppose you want to choose between the 520 (not the plus) and the 130. I would not buy the 520, it is old.

Regarding the 130. For me it is a device that I want to use on every ride. I am using it just to record my ride, nothing more. For longer touring rides where I need mapping I use an outdoor device (Oregon 700) as it has replacable AA batteries. The 130 has battery performance issues in latest firmware. In previous firmware I could use it up to 9 hours with livetrack and sensors connected. I did not see worse performance in cold weather. I just think it is the new firmware that caused higher battery usage. I am confident that Garmin will fix this in a new firmware.
  • I have and use both. In the UK both presently sell at the same price although the stock of 520's is pretty low as they have been replaced by the 520plus, which offers pre loaded maps and more space for them but unless you regularly use mapping isn't worth the extra £100 it sells for in the UK.

I use the 130 for off road, racing cross and everyday cycling.

I use the 520 for training on my road bike because of the larger selection of power meter fields.
For training with power the 520 is brtter, for everything else the 130.

The 130 screen is particularly good and visible even in bright lught.
  • Thank you both. I like the form-factor of the 130. I expect the 520 will be no longer available by the time I'm likely to upgrade. I wasn't really considering it until I saw the price was only £5 different. Hopefully the niggles with the 130 will get sorted out in software.
