Navigation prompts a little late

Went out for a ride today following a course on my Edge 130. Noticed that the navigation prompts to turn are late (I've already turned and tells me to turn 2 secs after). Or, it may be too exact on the point to turn. I thought this needs to be more pre-emptive considering the speed of your approach to the junction? Or the program logic is its expecting me to slow down substantially before turning?

  • This issue is not specific to the 130. I don't know which feature you have used to get TBT notice. But any that relise on the real turn point is usually late - ofr all GPS devices.
The only way to work around is to create a track on a platform like GPSies, let it create waypoints automatically and configure how fare upfront, so i.e. 100m, you like to get notice.
  • I used navigation on my Fenix 3 a few time when running or cycling , I recall only very few instances it was late on informing me of the turn. It seems worse on the Edge 130. Maybe good to do side by side testing.
  • It's a common issue with all of the units.

The 130 uses "course points" to provide turn notifications.

These are (generally) placed at the turns where the turns are on the map used to create the course.

They get displayed by the unit when you get close to them, pretty-much, at the turn. Obviously, they should display before the turn.

The process is over-precise on all units (not just the 130). On the unit I use, they often show up after the turn.

Another issue is that the location of the turn on the map might not match where the turn is in the real world.

The way to make them work better is to move them earlier in the track.

RWGPS provides an option to do that (it's a feature of the paid subscription).

Some of the Garmin units (1000/1030) will do that themselves.
  • Looks like it. The other night I had my Edge 130, 510, and Fenix 3 all on the handlebar running the same course on a road bike. Was very surprised to see both the 130 and Fenix prompt at exactly the same time at the turn or a second after when late. The 510 have an older user interface that does not prompt at the turn. Instead it keeps saying "Go South" or whatever direction your headed, but it does show "Turn right" way ahead of the turn.

Maybe I'll just turn off the prompt, and just rely on the Distance to Next.
