Calibrate altimeter

Dear forum colleagues, how do you calibrate the altimeter? I've not been able to see how to do this. The values shown are not the right ones, so calibration is needed...

Best regards-

Same problem here - I updated my Edge 130 to Version 3.00 and the altimeter immediately stopped reading anywhere near the correct altitude - Sometimes it reads 400 feet too high and other days it's 100 feet too low. Before the firmware update it was always within 20 feet of the correct value. I too wish I could revert to version 2.40.

Manual Altimeter calibration has now been added to the Edge 130 in firmware version 3.20. it's in the menu under Sensors > Altimeter and is a new feature that enables you to set the elevation at the start of your ride.

Automatic altimeter calibration is always on and works in the background using the elevation provided by GPS. It is greatly improved in 3.20 (it also worked pretty well in 2.40 but was essentially broken in 3.00).

    • Hold MENU.
    • Select Settings > Sensors & Accessories > Altimeter ">vivavideomaker">vivavideomaker.
    • Select an option: To calibrate automatically from your GPS starting point, select Auto Cal., and select an option. To enter the current elevation, select Calibrate.
  • I have the latest software version.
I manually calibrate the altimeter to my start location [300 feet]
I begin the ride and the Elevation says 29,700 feet...... Why...??
  • Barometers in electronics are very susceptible to calibration drift when temperature changes. If you try and calibrate the unit as soon as you go outside, or even worse, after having the unit in your pocket, it will drift significantly as it reaches ambient temperature.

I'd be interested to see if letting the unit settle to ambient temperature before calibration removes some of the more significant inaccuracies seen at the start of rides.

  • I have V3.00 on my 130.
    I understand (auto)calibration is forgotten in V3.00.
Garmin Connect only offers update to V3.30, but I'm hesitant, because of battery issues.
I now use 2 bars in a 5 hr ride. I'm affraid V3.30 will cost me valuable running time...
    Does anyone have a GUPDAT.GCD file with V2.40 ?

Like I said, does anyone have a GUPDATE.GCD file with fw V2.40 ?
Would like to try that on my 130.
  • The altimeter calibration works very well in 3.30. and there are no "battery issue" on 3.30. Only thing what was changed, is that the filtering of the Battery level was decreased. So after switching on, when all sensors are connecting, synchronisation with smartphone is done and GPS is searching for satellites the battery drain is high and the level indication drops for a couple of minutes The effect of shorter battery life, which many of users claimed, is caused by colder weather. This was the first winter for Edge 130. Remember, you don't have the your Edge in the pocket, but on the handlebars, exposed to the cold air. Of course there could be units with a flawed battery, but it has nothing to do with the firmware 3.30
  • I also have had an Etrex30 and an Edge810 on the handlebars for many winters.
Never seen winter having such an impact on those...

Anyway, I updated tot v3.30 this morning, so let's see how the 130 holds up.
If there is a battery problem, it can't be a temperature related, temperature is 20C and above.

Altimeter can be calibrated in 3.30, that's a plus.
