Strava live segments for dummies

Apologies if this is an obvious question....For example, when pacing a segment, if unit displays PR -00:15; am I moving 15secs slower or faster than my fastest PR time? Intuitively I would think that -00:15 means faster and +00:15 is slower, but it seems to be the opposite based on my experiences so far. Do I have this correct?
  • It is 15 seconds slower. Think of the timing as being more like the timing gates on a downhill ski run. It is giving you the delta to the VP time. + is ahead, - is behind.

Great thanks aweatherall, that makes sense. I was thinking in terms of + = additive, more time. Now if only I can make it display, more + and less - when I'm riding my favorite segments

It is weird, Garmin said I was -10sec on pr, which I thought was a new pr, then the edge briefly shows I am +10s on my Strava pr. Totally opposite behaviour...
