How do I add custom cues to the turn cues to identify food and sightseeing stops on the upper turn window with an audible beep?

When cycle touring, I want to have food stops and sightseeing locations pop up on the upper turn window with an audible beep on my Edge 1030+.  POI's are visible in a very small font, with no audible beep.  I have found that I can add Custom Cues in RideWithGPS that when I download the file as an FIT or TCX, I will get a beep and an alert on the bottom of the screen.  Unfortunately, all the turns in FIT and TCX format have an annoying round magenta turn arrow that takes up too much space on the screen in tight cities.

Is there any way to see the Custom Cues in a GPX format that does not include the round magenta turn arrows?

Garmin support documentation is almost worthless, and their phone support told me I could not have audible and visual alerts, which I later found I could in FIT and TCX. That I would have to print a cue sheet!

Has anyone found a better method?

  • The map page top field (Guide Text) is only for device generated “Turn Guidance”. The Course Points are an optional and seperate independent navigation system. RWGPS will generate Course Points in Fit & TCX outputs for turns and custom created entries, the turns will generally duplicate those generated by the Garmin itself and can be confusing as you get both. You can clear the RWGPS created ones in the route creator/editor before you create your own custom ones and then you get the Garmin turn notification in the top of the map and your custom ones at the bottom of the map. Clearing the turn entries in RWGPS will also eliminate the “round magenta arrows” on the map for the turns leaving only your custom ones. If you are creating custom course points in RWGPS you must have a premium account and another feature available is moving the course point some distance ( you choose but say 50m) before the actual point, this is a benefit as otherwise you only get the custom notice as you roll over the point and not before.

With course points 2 other data  fields are available, Course Point Distance (Crs. Pt. Dist.) shows the distance to the next point from your current position together with a point type symbol and Next Point Location* shows the name of the next point (only 10 characters), these “should” work but different devices have some variations in usage, you can put these fields on the map page or another data screen. When you have course points an additional data screen is available, (generally after your otherwise last screen so you have to scroll to it), which displays a list of the Course Points, Type Symbols and current distance to each one.

Try these and see if it gives what you want.

PS You can create the courses with Garmin Connect (web version better) and this does not create the turn course points but allows addition of custom points though RWGPS is much much better for course creation.

PPS I have screenshots of all this but they are on my computer and not the iPad I am currently using, if you have trouble understand what is available I can dig them out.

*Next Point Location can also get confusing as different devices behave differently and the field can mix device generated instruction names and course point names, the Course Point List screen only has Course Points so is less confusing

  • So I followed your instructions, deleted the Course Points, and exported the route file with Custom Cues in a FIT format, and I got:

    • The turn instructions at the top of the screen with NO magenta arrows cluttering it up
    • A beep and the Custom Cue, abbreviated, on the bottom of the screen.
    • When I set up the Custom Cues, I assigned some as Left, Right, or Food, and I get a Left and Right arrow in the bottom field so I know which side of the road to look on, or a Food icon..

Not sure I need the Course Point Distance, but nice to know.  I can always look at the last page with the distances to the Custom Cues.

Not necessarily the most elegant process when there are pop ups to Eat or Drink, but it works!

I have called Garmin several times about this and every rep was clueless, they just look at the Edge manual which is very incomplete and confusing.  RWGPS advised that I could use Custom Cues in a FIT or TCX format but had no idea how to get rid of the magenta turn arrows.

You are the first person in ten years who seems truly knowledgable about the Garmin Edge routing systems.  Many, many thanks to you L. Rouge!!!!

Next question.  Since I had already added Custom Cues to several long routes, is there an easy way to delete the regular Cuesheet turns?  If I click on Clear All Cues, it eliminates the Custom Cues I have added them.   I know I can delete the regular Cues one at a time, but this can be time consuming.  Otherwise, I'll just have to Clear All and add the Custom Cues back.

  • Just realized that the Custom Cue descriptions appear on my Edge 1030 screen, but not POIs, in either FIT or TCX formats.

  • There does not seem to be a function for only removing the generated cues leaving the custom ones, the "Review Cues" tool might be the easiest way of only removing some

  • I don't use POIs so not familiar with them but they are not written to the cue entries so won't be included in the course points (for TCX or Fit) . When you output GPX (Track) format there are options to include cues and / or POIs as "waypoints" but I don't know what the 1040 will do with Waypoints, some planning sites treat them like Course Points but others ignore them. . You might have to create a small course and see what happens.

  • I like POIs because they standout on the RideWithGPS map.  When you download the file in a GPX format and Include POIs as Waypoints, the POI description appears as a small font on the Garmin Edge 1030 screen,  But no audible beep to alert you so it is easy to ride past.  I will have to check what happens if I include Cues as Waypoints,

  • The RWGPS POIs only get included in GPX files (as an option)

    These POIs don’t get announced.

These POIs get added to the “locations” list (you can choose a location as a lace to navigate to).

(If you want them along with course points, you have to load the GPX version of the course before the TCX/FIT version with turning the device off/on in between).

Course points only exist in TCX or FIT files.

I will have to check what happens if I include Cues as Waypoints,

They get added as locations (just like POIs) and they don’t get announced (just like POIs).

    ===================

Your only option to course points and deleting the ones you want.

Note that Garmin Connect only includes the custom ones. That means you wouldn’t need to delete course points if you used Garmin Connect to create your courses.

    =====================

The older Edges supported “proximity alerts” for places added by another means. These were yet another kind of POIs. But the 1040 and other newer units no longer support this feature.

  • but I don't know what the 1040 will do with Waypoints,

The waypoints in GPX files get added as locations. (This is what happens on all the Edges.)

You get all of them (not just the ones added as custom cues).

  • Seems like you could quickly fill up the device with locations, maybe not too useful

  • I didn't say it was useful! I just described what it did.
