Maps on SDCard. Does sdcard for maps coexist with internal storage?

I am not clear on how this works.  My default maps are North America.  I bought a Garmin SDcard for Europe.  I placed it in the back of the unit. I turned it on and I can see Europe streets.  I have some routes and I can see them.

Do both maps coexist?  Does the GPS automatically bring up the map regardless of internal or SD storage?  Will the card replace the internal storage maps?  If I am using the maps on the SD card, do I need to worry about performance while I am riding?  Do I need to make the European maps the default map?

  • 1) leave the European map on the SD - no problem with performance
    2) you can simply activate both maps, NA and Europe. Since there is no overlapping - no problem

Which map will be shown depends on the current GPS coordinates. When you‘re riding in Europe - EU map will show, when you ride in NA the according map will show up.

(In terms of a clean device setup, however, you can disable EU map when you're in NA - and vice versa....)
