Hi there, I live in the UK and I am about to travel to New Zealand. What I'd like to know is whether my Garmin Edge 1030 will work there on rides, and whether I need to change any settings or buy any maps (hopefully not)?

The 1030 only comes with the maps for the device’s home region (presumably, you have a North American one).
You can buy maps from Garmin but that doesn’t include updates (AFAIK). The also might not…
dpawlyk It's also possible to use an extra sd-card you can put into the 1030. Then there is no need of deleting existing maps.

With the 1030+ and newer models, Garmin includes world-wide detailed maps (an FYI).
These, like the Garmin ones, are based on Openstreetmap data. Be sure to use the “Latin” ones (not Unicode).
There are quite a few sources for free maps. I prefer one that let you select a custom region. Custom regions make getting what you need in the smallest size. That feature is not so important for NZ (if you can get a map just for NZ).
https://garmin.bbbike.org/ is a good source (but there’s a limit to the size of custom regions).
You can, of course, try it for you neighborhood. Just be sure to disable the default map (the routing can get confused with more than one map covering the same area).
This is one of those things tha can seem a bit confusing the first time (it’s easier the next time).
You usually get a *.img file (gmapsupp.img is a common name. You can rename the file. You copy the file to the \Garmin folder on the device.
Before you get there, you should check if the map is correctly installed. On your Edge, select your bike profile, go to the map screen and, by zooming out and moving the map to NZ, try to zoom in a city you will go. You should be able to see the street...
Good luck!
