Navigate Home on gravel trail

This past one year I started preferring biking on mixed gravel-hardpack trails instead of open asphalt roads, especially when my Wife saw a last time over 400 ish cars passed me in a two hour ride. So anyway, I am lucky enough that I have several 50+Km trails around my town and never could get bored.

But happened especially lately, in my way back I turn on the Navigation to my Home (in my bookmarked addresses in the menu). And the Edge 1030 want to take me to the closest asphalt. I refuse and just keeps riding on the trail, the Edge recalculates and all fine to the next asphalt exit again. Btw this trail is longer then it would take me to ride on the asphalt.

Is there any pre-configured setting  where I can tell the Edge to keep my ride on the trail and skip asphalt/roads/Hwy's ?

  • On my edge 1030+ I have a gravel profile setup and when I use navigation it directs me on gravel routes.

Are you using a road profile?

  • Yes, my bike and sensors all set in the Gravel profile. When I am ready to ride out from home on the trail not many times I am using the Navigation only in my way back and until I am "on trail" all works well. But,

my gravel trails crossing the asphalt roads either under the bridges or I need to jump to the other side of asphalt at some intersections, and here the Edge "prefers" me riding on asphalt, if I keep following the trail it recalculates and never sends me to U-turn.

It feels like the Edge is trying to make a shortcut on asphalt because that would be a "shorter and faster way" to get to point B (home).

  • Have you checked that the Navigation settings in your Gravel profile are what you need and not the defaults for road cycling ? Gravel did not exist when the 1030 arrived so this is a profile you created yourself. Just calling it gravel is obviously not enough, you need to work the required settings. Make sure you got the setting right to let it use trails and unpaved roads.

  • I cannot recall making a custom "gravel" profile, but I have the Edge 1030 probably about four + years, anything possible. I will need a closer look again if I need or how to re-configure.

Edit: I just went through all the options in the "Gravel" profile.

And I found something in the "Navigation" options that is/was confusing me.

The "Select Routing Mode" I have several options - Road cycling, Mixed Surface cycling, Gravel Cycling, Mountain Cycling, Automotive...Motorcycle and so on. Since my trails are combination of loose gravel - hardpack - some asphalt (on the trail) I had selected  the "Mixed Surface cycling". I don't know if that would make much of a difference, or shall I just select "Gravel" only? My next ride I will try that out and report back.

  • Try “gravel”.

That should prefer gravel but it won’t not use asphalt. The device knows you are trying to get to a particular place and gravel doesn’t go every where.

“Mixed surfaces” should prefer asphalt (it’s faster) but allow gravel (turn if it’s shorter).

“Road”’should strongly disfavor gravel (many people don’t want anything to do with gravel).

  • Thanks, I will try next time "Navigate" with "gravel". Yes, that would need my reading glasses diving deep into submenu's but maybe worth a try.

I have many trails around my smaller city, many overlapping or X-crossing, but wherever I riding out I need to climb first, also climb last in my way back. Some of the climbs are harder and depend if I was on a 3-4 hour trip I don't want to finish with a climb but improvising and going around and following the river Slight smile
