Garmin power pack and edge 820

I bought a Garmin Power Pack for my edge 820, missing the fact it's primarily designed for the Garmin 1030.
Issues I have - T

The front mount is sealed and does not allow for the battery extension to be inserted all the way through. I am presuming this is because it's the 820 and not 1030.

I, therefore, presumed that the attachment that comes with the battery will somehow attach to the mount with screws. I cannot, however, attach the battery to it and hold the battery.

I have been online looking for a video to illustrate what to do and have not found one.

I would be most grateful of any assistance. Have a 200km bike ride soon and thought that this was a neat though expensive way to charge the bike computer. However its become at present an expensive waste of money.

Many thanks in advance

  • I am pretty sure the 820 does not have the connection on the back of the unit - 5 small holes with electrodes in them.. You can connect a usb connector to the battery and then connect it to your 820 where you normally charge it.

  • I fully agree there are no connections. I my problem is my inability to attach the battery with the attachment to the front mount below the Edge 820.

    Thanks

  • Don't know if this helps, but you can buy a USB cable like the attached.

  • The Charge is compatible with the Edge 820. On the product page it is said that you need a USB connection cable for devices without the charging contacts in the socket (there are other devices like the 830 with those contacts). Garmin has a cable like this one https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/pn/010-12562-01

Further that insert you got with your Charge is to be used with a mount like described in the manual static.garmin.com/.../Edge_External_Battery_Pack_ML15.pdf

Looking at the product page is tells us that this mount is compatible, there you can replace the insert with the one contained as accessory https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/pn/010-12563-00

Now the fun part: usually 1030 users don't need that cable and stuff and can't help you, but there is a subforum for your very specific device at forums.garmin.com/.../edge-820

  • I am unsure what mounts people have. Mine has a fixed plastic rear cover that cannot be removed. So it's not possible to insert/replace anything into it other than a small screw.

Many thanks, I have switched over to the subforum. I am rather new to this.

  • The one included with your Edge 820 simply is not compatible with the Charge Battery Pack.

If you want to stick it under your mount you need to get a Flush Out-Front Mount
    T
hat mount has "a hole" in the center and you can replace the insert with the one of your Charge Battery Pack.
You can see the difference in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPj6snxhQrE

  • The Power Pack is not compatible with the 820. It works with 530, 830 and 1030. It needs connection contacts on the mount which are absent on the 820, regardless of the mount. The mounts that come with compatible devices have an insert that can be replaced to work with the battery pack but since your device is not compatible, it did not come with a mount that can take that replacement insert. The replacement insert comes with the power pack and can also be purchased separately. So you need to return that power pack it is no use to you, or upgrade you Edge device. You can use a regular battery pack with your Edge 820 but will have to plug using a USB cable. Not as functional but should be able to make it work at least when you stop for coffee and food.

  • Define "compatible"...

Neat integrated sleek looking? Yeah, get a x30 or up Edge with charging contacts in the mounting socket.

If you want to place it under your mount? Get a compatible mount.

The Charge is even compatible with your Air Pods, it has a USB type A outlet where you can charge everything.

So it is "compatible" with every edge device, you can mount it But if you don't want to cable it up...

At least it will be better looking than a duct taped powerbank...

  • Just for reference, this is as sleek as it gets without getting a new edge.

  • Can I hijack a thread please?

I have the long front out mount, the Edge1030 on top and the Varia light mounted from the bottom.

Planning this year to start with multiple days gravel riding and I would most likely welcome the battery pack.

Without having in my hands I cannot picture myself how these tree units would/could sandwich together? Is this possible anyhow? I would like to avoid any loose wires from the frame bag- just for a powerpack
