Ineffective navigation: what am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I have been using my 1030 for the better part of one year now, and for the life of me, I cannot understand what am I doing wrong with the navigation.
I prepare my route carefully on a PC with the COnnect webpage. It's not the smoothest experience, but eventually I get a route, which I send to the device, and consistently appears.

Then I start riding, and every now and then, even when I'm right on the trail, I get an "Off Course" warning.
I could understand the occasional loss of GPS signal, but I am mostly in open space. Even so, even assuming this is related to some issues with GPS, following the route becomes nearly impossible, as the 1030 wants me to go back to the last spot it thought I was on course.
I understand that it might not be "instantaneous" like a car GPS, but at times it takes 5-10 minutes to realize I am back on my trail (which I never left), with a constant series of beeping and request to "make a U turn". The map shows I'm on the trail. It really wants me to go back, from the place where I am, on the trail, back to a point I - supposedly - missed.

It cannot possibly be designed like this. It is a high-end device, and all the review I looked at indicated it as "excellent" for navigation: the best money can get.

To be clear: the way it is working today is, literally, ***. I apologize for being direct, but today I actually missed the trail, as I was relying on the 1030 to navigate me in an area which I am not familiar with, but when I was there (on the trail) it kept telling me to make a U-turn instead of actually navigating me. So I did actually miss the trail.

Is there a way to force rerouting in a somewhat more natural way? A way to tell this thing that if I miss 2 meters of the trail I don't really have to go back there, especially if I am back on the trail? I can accept it would take 15-20 seconds (instead of it being nearly immediate in any modern car navigation) but minutes/kilometers?

I am even willing to stop and press something that would let it know that I just want it to continue following from where I am. It would be annoying, but much better than what it does today.

Thanks in advance,
Walter

If you are preparing the route then you don't need the Garmin "turn guidance", you can turn this off in Navigation>Courses>Course options. You lose the long "calculating…
