Periodic Shut-Downs Caused by Shimano Di2 After 12.20 Update

I've noticed that my Edge 1030 will sometimes shut down and reboot after the 12.20 update. Today, I finally caught it in action when it shut down and automatically started a reboot after a Shimano Di2 shift. Normally I just catch the reboot without knowing what caused it. I don't have much else connected to the 1030, just a hub speed sensor, a couple of widgets, and the usual iPhone notifications. The Di2 is significantly charged with recent updates on all components including the bluetooth wireless unit, which is another story if you only own Mac computers. Has anybody else seen this issue with the Di2 connection?

  • Are the widgets Di2 related or show Di2 stuff? Maybe they aren't compatible with the latest Edge firmware and therefore crashing the device while trying to display something while shifting.

Have you tried to disable them and try again?

  • I have no Di2 related apps or widgets. I deleted Strava Routes and Best Bike Split Race Sync yesterday, since i have not used them in a long while. Besides the Garmin internal apps, I have only AccuWeather MinuteCast, Trailforks, and the Rain & Wind data field. Rode 36 miles this morning with no issues, but the problem has been periodic. Hopefully removing those apps might have corrected it. I did notice that the Strava app is no longer supported, which might have been a problem with Garmin 1030 updates.

  • Neither I have Di2 stuff, however, after ~3-4 weeks I have seen only once when my computer switched off itself. Battery was around 50% so that is not the case and also there are no sudden battery power drops neither cold weather conditions (it happened around +20 C).
Also typical problem when there is a bluetooth connection between my phone and 1030 then sometimes 1030 does not shutdown when I initiate it. (I always power it off by using shutdown instead of send it to sleep or similar)

Actually wondering why Garmin stops updating these devices or decreasing the price dramatically to be able to replace it in each year as per their expectation (as per my observation both product quality and software bugs are not too good compared to the prices)

  • I do not have Di2, but I have had repeated instances of my Edge 1030 shutting down in the last several weeks, including twice on a ride yesterday and once today. I'm curious if anyone else is noticing this issue with the 12.20 update?

  • Hello,

I'had the same problem with my 1030 when connected with my GIANT e-bike.

I've downgraded the firmware at 12.00 version and now  it works fine!

  • I contacted Garmin Support and they suggested a "Master Reset" of my Edge 1030. I did it and did not have any issues on my ride today, but it wasn't a constant issue to begin with. I'll update if it happens any more.  Here is the process that the Customer Support Rep gave me for doing a Master Reset - It's a bit long.

    ______________________________________________________

Before the reset, you can backup some of the data from your device to make the set up a little easier.

Also make sure all your activities are uploaded to Garmin Connect.

Click the link below for information on how to backup and restore some of the data from your Edge X:

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=AXV7LuWgc73v21nq6nbDa6&searchQuery=backup%20forerunner

Follow these instructions to unpair your Edge 1030 from your smartphone.

    On your Edge 1030:

Select Menu > Connected Features > Phone > Smartphone > Forget Phone > checkmark

    On your smartphone:

Open the Garmin Connect Mobile app

Select Menu (or More if an iPhone)

    Scroll down to Garmin Devices

    Select the Edge 1030

You should see three vertical dots in the upper right-had corner

    Select the dots

    Select Remove device

    Select Remove

Go to the Settings on your phone

    Go to the Bluetooth

Anywhere you see the Edge 1030 listed, select the device and remove the Bluetooth pairing.

Disable the Bluetooth and Power your phone OFF.

Follow the instructions below to Master Reset the Edge 1030:

    Master reset

    1.Power device off
    2.Press and hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop
3.Power device on while still holding both buttons
4.Continue holding buttons when the Garmin "splash" screen appears
5.Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears

The head unit is now reset. Leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.

Power your phone ON and Enable the Bluetooth.

Now you will be ready to go through the process to set up the Edge 1030.

  • On my edge 1030 coupled with Giant Ebike, the master reset procedure didn't solve  definitively auto shutdown problem..

Only the 12.00 firmware solved it..
