Edge 1030+ 3 blinking dots

Symptoms:

  • 3 blinking lights on screen above Garmin logo
  • Will not open to any other screens
  • When plugged into computer it does not recognize the unit

Already tried:

  • Holding down the power button for 10 seconds - did not fix

Any ideas to fix this?  Thanks.

  • On turned off device:

-remove SD card (if „normal“ 1030)
-press (and keep on pressing) lap button and plug in to PC - keep pressing lap button until PC recognize Edge
    -delete all files in /Garmin/NewFiles
-backup and delete all files in /Garmin/Activities and /Garmin/Courses
    -unplug device and let boot

If devices booted successfully you can copy back Activities and courses (step by step)

  • If this question is about the Edge 1030 Plus, it has a dedicated forum: forums.garmin.com/.../edge-1030-plus

  • Thanks everyone - appreciate the help.  I did get it working using the 'Push and hold on left hand bottom button while plugging into the computer, then deleting the New Activities file and courses file.'  This is the second time this has happened, I've determined its related to downloading GPX files onto the 1030 that are somehow corrupt - or in the most recent case - I think the GPX had too many way points.  Of course its difficult to determine a GPX file is corrupt until it disables the GPS.

As an aside, the Master Reset would not work in this case.

  • If it's a GPX track you are using as a course, which was created from a previously recorded activity it can be quite a big file size due to the amount of data it contains. As such it can take the edge ages to process it. I've had one take 20 minutes! During that time you'll see the cycling 3 dots on start-up

Unless it's absolutely necessary to have the course in GPX format it might be worth downloading it as a FIT course, which is much smaller & takes a fraction of the time to process by the edge.

  • Good to know it wasn't just me. I think the mutiple reboots is still a better option than deleting, copying and reinstating courses etc.
