1030 Lockscreen

I sweat a lot - like a steady shower.  I lock the screen, but it isn't truly locked.  My sweat pours on the screen and it constantly changes the metrics I have chosen.  And worse, it even causes fields to be swapped around from their physical location.  And since there is standing water and constant drops of sweat falling on it, it doesn't pickup the fact that my finger is touching it as I try to reset things.

When I lock the screen I want touch disabled!

Another related pain is that my headlight constantly connects and disconnects from the light network.  Each time causes a message to cover the bottom of the screen.  It doesn't go away until I tap it which means I have to unlock the screen and tap the message to make it go away.  Reread my first paragraph to see what a pain that is for me.

Just finished a ride with it in my back pocket.  Not useful at all in my back pocket.

Lock may work for non heavy sweaters, but I need a complete disable of the touch screen until I hit a physical button.

For me, this is a piece of useless weight I'm carrying.

  • Your description of the issue doesn't match with the expected behavior of the device when the screen lock is activated. Is it possible that you have not locked the screen? Or, that your device's screen lock feature is malfunctioning?

For your reference, when the screen lock is activated (press and release the power button on the side of the device while recording an activity), the screen will not respond to taps, nor swipes from the top of the screen. It will only permit swiping left and right to change the displayed screen.

The description of "constantly changes the metrics I have chosen" is what can happen when the screen is inundated with liquid. Occasionally when it is raining hard on a ride, like yesterday, after locking the screen I will occasionally experience swipes between the displayed screen for me. If you are experiencing "ghost" touches after locking the screen, I'm pretty sure your screen is not locked, or the screen lock is not working on your device.

  • Indeed garmin understanding about lockscreen is diferent than the rest of us. This behaviour is from many fw versions in the past.

You can't go wrong, to think that you have locked the screen, since it also writes "locked screen" when you press the power button shortly.

  • I've now tested the screen lock and the only thing you can do with screen lock on is swipe left and right to switch between data screens. Everything else is locked.

The buttons on the sides can be used.

I got the Edge Remote and use it a lot on all my rides. That works with the screen locked. I've set the quick button to display the map which is what I most often need to access really quickly when I approach crossroads or in cities.

  • I'm definitely locking it.  I have 2 data screens set up and can swap back and forth between the two screens when locked as you said.  However, within about 10-15 minutes I am pouring sweat (and I do mean pouring) and it falls directly on the screen of my Garmin 1030.  It doesn't take long before my drops of sweat make my 1030 start to act like it is NOT locked and begins to switch fields.  If I don't look down for 3 or 4 minutes my screen will look very different than when I locked it.  And from that point on it is constantly changing the screen on me every few seconds.  I've had at least 4 1000s before I bought this 1030 and never had an issue like this before when I locked the screen (and my sweat rate has always been this high, so it is NOT new for me).

  • same. the newer edge models are so bad. i have 1030. wife has 8something. can't be used in the wet. can't be used in the tropics. the absolute shittest product. i have had every model since the 301? i use an old 810 if i know it will be raining. Currently researching alternatives. My Garmin is the single cause of frustration and screaming on any ride.

  • today i had it screen locked yet all sorts of random screens were popping up as i rode and the sweat poured.

  • Here in the PNW I have the same issue, but with rain (sweat in the Summer too). My ghetto fix is a Ziplock snack bag where the bag is opened and 1/2 is attached between the mount and the 1030. Basically, you are putting the 1030 inside a Ziplock bag for protection, but you can also pull the bag off to the side and it's still attached to the mount. Like I said, ghetto, but it keeps the unit from freaking the f@$k out in the rain and sweat.

  • I had issues with the screen not locking properly when attaching a Garmin PowerPack. It seems that connecting/disconncting the power pack mess with the screen lock a bit as if the power button was pressed. But if using the Edge on its own screen lock seems to work fine. Food for thought .... do you connect a USB power source as you ride, a Garmin Power Pack, anything of the sort ?

  • I have the exact same challenge with the Garmin 1030. It would be great to be able to completely disable the screen, instead of having the current "lock" where still you can swipe screens (which can be caused by rain or sweat) or, even worse, the unit disregards the lock because of the standing water/sweat on the unit. @Garmin - it would be great to have a fix for this rather frustrating issue. Thank you for the support.
