GPX not aligned correctly can I correct it?

Hi,

If I import a GPX file, most the route is slightly off. Which makes cycling journeys for the first time a lot more confusing. As I'm hardly ever actually shown as on the road/path correctly. It's a mess of lines.

How can I correct the route [ideally in Garmin Connect before I send it to the device] - so the route is actually on the roads/paths/etc and not slightly off?

Do I have to go through the whole map manually - or can I click an option to make it all snap to the nearest real road/path?

Thanks for any help as this has been annoying me on rides for some time

  • That could just be due to the road being incorrectly positioned on the map. I've been riding routes where the actual position of the road was half a field away from where it was indicated on the map on the GPS. When I got home I logged into OpenStreetMap and uploaded the GPS trace and corrected the map.

Another possible reason is that different maps don't all have roads at exactly the same location. I often notice, when I'm creating a course in RWGPS, that if I create a course using their OSM map option, and then say check it with the satellite map to see what sections are unsealed, that the route which was exactly following the roads on the OSM map is now slightly off on the satellite map. And if I change any portion of the route using the satellite map and then go back to OSM, I have the same problem in reverse.

In RWGPS, a section of the route between two control points will snap to a road when you move it with the mouse. Don't know about other systems because I don't use them.

  • Hey,

It looks like I need a paid membership of RWGPS for that?

I guess in Garmin Connect - I can go all along the route and click short sections and get it to 'redraw' them sections.... can I get Garmin Connect to do that? Or otherwise I just need to do short sections and see if they correct. My worry is if I do a larger section, it will re calculate and change the route too much.

It does seem often that the person doing the GPX file just drew short sections as the crow flied... or as you say the maps/roads are all in slightly different places

    Thanks

  • I think you can use RWGPS for free, with some limitations. I forget what those limitations are, as I've had a paid subscription for quite a long time.

I've never used Connect for any route planning.

  • Thanks - it seems to tell you, you need to upgrade to import a GPX file

Maybe I need to get that 'map' up and then just draw the journey all in by hand on Garmin Connect - grr

    Thanks for the help though

  • It's impossible to change in Garmin Connect

Another [better question] would be - anybody use anything to plan trips - that then does 100% work with the Garmin 1030. And doesn't have all the roads/paths [from GPX files] off

  • Ok... it seems you can do it in the free version. Strange as when I first tried to upload a GPX it asked me to upgrade.

I did the control points - as you mentioned above. It works very well.

The file still ended up being 'out' on Garmin... but now only a tiny bit. It's super close to being correct. So thanks so much... xx

Different maps often have the roads in different places. Generally, they are close (but they are rarely in exactly the same place).

The satellite view uses the "RWGPS map" for routing (that is, road/path placement). This map is based on Google.

The current Garmins use maps based on Openstreetmap (OSM) data. You want to use OSM maps to plan the route.

Both RWGPS and Garmin Connect let you use OSM maps (I suspect nearly every route planner does).

It would be useful to see the GPX file.

  • I use Garmin Basecamp to create routes. Further using same maps in Basecamp as on Garmin (I use openfietsmap)

Then these mismatches shouldn't be there too.
