Edge 1030 vs 1030 Plus - Trailforks MTB

I am looking to purchase either a 1030 or 1030 Plus mainly for seeing the start of MTB trails, options and route planning. I believe with the Plus model, a route option pops up when at a junction to the start of trails?

With good deals on 1030 at the moment, there is quite a price differential so I am trying to understand if any recent 1030 updates have improved or added any additional Trailforks functionality or usability?

If my understanding is correct:

Trailforks maps are reported to be embedded in the Garmin maps with 1030 Plus.

Trailforks app is accessible via 1030 but can only run one app/ function at a time so maybe not as good an experience or slower when out?

If anyone can clarify the differences from a usability and experience point of view, it would be helpful to understand if the added cost of the Plus is worthwhile.

Thanks

Mark

  • My MTB club has been mapping all the local trails into Trail Forks... Last year when trail forks decided to go subscription, I decided to subscribe due to how much I use it. The benefit was than I could now download the trail forks maps and install them into my 1030...

I didn't lie the embedded Trailforks app in the 1030 but I am very pleased with using the map instead of the Garmin maps.

  • Thank you for the info. Sorry some further questions would be useful to get an idea from your experience:

I'm guessing the map download and instal process involves going to the Trailforks website and manually installing, where as the new Plus model perhaps more automatic via the regular Garmin software update process?

If simple enough a process on the 1030 thats fair enough. I suppose you just repeat the download and instal routine as and when worthwhile updates show up on Trailforks.

Is the Trailforks layer interactive, i.e. can you click on a trail to see the start/ end or names etc.?

I believe there is a feature called Forksight that is in the newer models like the 830 and 1030 Plus. Therefore I guess you've never seen this be added to 1030 in any recent firmware updates? https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=P01Lqy8vUY84LonexcjNE9

    Thanks in advance.

  • The 1030 Plus, as well as the 530 and 830, come with a TrailForks map built-in and pre-installed on the device. You get updates the same way you get updates to your Garmin Cycling Map. When you pick the MTB activity profile the Trailforks map is used unless you change the settings.

The 1030 is not covered by this partnership between Garmin and Trailforks (the device was released before it took effect) so the Trailforks specific features were not added to the 1030. Since ForkSight depends on having the Trailforks map that feature never came to the 1030. However some MTB features like Flow and Grit were added via firmware updates.

  • Brilliant! Many thanks for explaining so clearly. All makes sense now.

Therefore think I'll pass on the good deals on the 1030 and instead go for either the 830 or 1030 Plus.

830 is maybe more suited for MTB I guess for the physical size and risks

  • For the E1030, I download all the tracks I'm interested in from TrialForks and save them as courses. I set the color of each trail / course according to the original color of the trail and set the permanent display of paths that I am interested in on the map.
This way I have all the trails I'm interested in, with the original colors of the trails overlaid on the map. If I want to use a trail as a course, I just load the course and have the course, including ClimPro.
