New to me Edge 1030 - connection issues with Powertap P1 pedals (fine on Edge 1000)

Hi there.

I have just picked up an excellent condition but previously owned Edge 1030. It is on 11.10 firmware so up to date. This is to be an "upgrade" from my Edge 1000 which I have had since new 2015. The pedals work perfectly on the 1000 both prior to getting the 1030 and when checked today again in case they had developed a fault.

The unit had been reset and so I configured it, and connected it to my iPhone and Garmin Connect. Sorted out "Add Device" connections to my HRM, Speed sensor, Di2 and my Powertap P1 pedals all under Ant+ (Ant+ private for the Di2).

First ride out the pedals connected, calibrated, and then relatively soon after setting off I got the "Right pedal missing error" which persisted in returning. Eventually power went completely. On my second ride I couldn't get it to connect beyond the initial first minute or so.

I replaced the batteries in the P1 pedals even though they were showing as full, upgraded them to the latest firmware, neither of which improved the situation and then after reading the forums did a soft reset on the 1030 which seems to have improved connection slightly but it is still flakey.

I'm struggling to work this one out. Is the 1030 more sensitive to Ant+ connections than the 1000, could I have an issue with the Ant+ receiver in the head unit - I'm assuming there is no reasonable limit to the number of Ant+ I can have connected at any one time... HRM, Power, Speed, and Di2 is only 4 devices active.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I can return this used unit, and I could buy a new one - but I'm not going to do that if it is going to behave the same way.

Many thanks in advance

Mike.

  • I don't know if I am answering my own question yesterday evening and today I spent some more time on this and todays ride was good with no drop outs of any of the Ant+ accessories.

Replaced all the batteries, charged the 1030, a couple of soft resets while testing things - span up the pedals before switching on the 1030 just before I set off. It all connected, and stayed connected.....

Not sure if it was a settling in period, or it all needed some TLC but it *seems* to be OK again. Lets see if it is still OK once I get back outside again after a few expected days of rain.
