Garmin and Zwift at the same time?

Hi,

I hope someone can help. My ideal indoor setup has been disrupted by my wife, and I am now faffing around trying to make the best with the stuff she hasn't pinched! So I now have the following at my disposal to use in any combination that will work:

A direct drive turbo trainer (but it doesn't do cadence)

A first gen Garmin cadence sensor (ANT+ only I believe)

Apple TV with ZWIFT

Garmin Edge 820 head unit

Garmin Speed Sensor

Heart rate monitor (bluetooth)

Vector 3 pedals (not duel sided)

I want to have my preprogrammed training sessions control the turbo trainer via Zwift. I want to be able to record my power, heart rate and cadence. I think that my best option is Zwift linked to turbo trainer for control, and then pedals and hr monitor linked to Edge 820 to record the sessions. However, I've just tried this and it didn't record it. Do I need a speed sensor attached as well? Do I need to change settings in the Edge? Should I be doing something completely different?

Thanks in advance,

  • Why not link Zwift to Garmin Connect and it will push the data to GC after your ride?
I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve by running both Zwift and Edge at the same time. I sometimes run my KICKR connected to Zwift and my 4i powermeter connected to my edge to see if the power numbers are comparable but that's about it.

  • Thanks for the reply BarryRoubaix, I should have explained that the reason why I'm stuck like this is that Apple TV only accepts two bluetooth inputs at the same time, and because my turbo trainer doesn't do cadence, it means I can't record cadence, power and heart rate at the same time, so I'm trying work around where I connect Zwift to the turbo trainer, but use other devices and sensors to actually record my ride data.

  • I too run Apple TV - I connect my KICKR (controllable trainer), 4iiii power meter (Power & Cadence), TICKR heart rate monitor and Sterzo steering all via the Zwift companion app on my android phone.

You now have to connect all sensors via phone or via ATV (before you could have a mix on each)  but a recent update on Zwift removed that option.

  • Ah perfect - I tried just connecting my HR monitor via the app but it didn't work. I will try tonight putting them all via the app and hope that solves it. Thanks so much for your help.

  • It's not that intuitive. The sequence is key to successful connection. Worth a google to find a good tutorial. I think GPLama has a good YouTube guide. Once sorted..... it's been very reliable.

Just watch out for the older guides if they suggest adding some via ATV and the rest via phone. If you have too many, they all need to go by phone now.
