Incorrect recorded mileage 1030

I have updated to version 11 and noticed the rides have recorded around 1 mile less than actual mileage and the average speed was down too, How do i know this? My son has an edge 130 and his recorded 1 mile more, i also created the route on Garmin connect and that was also saying 1 mile more, any suggestions?

  • Are you using GPS for your distance calculation, or are you using a speed sensor? We would need to check if anything else has changed in your setup as there shouldn't be anything in the update that causes this. 

    Also, have you made any edits to your recording interval or GPS settings? It's possible that some of these settings may have changed after the update, although this isn't by design. 

  • Hi Blake, i do have a speed sensor, how do you check to see if i have gps or speed sensor? i know its set to gps galileo, no changes have been made to interval or gps settings, it twice now it happened, and both times re-created the route on connect

  • If you have a speed sensor then that's where the distance is coming from. If you go into the sensor details, is the wheel size set correctly? Also, could you share links to a previous activity and the most recent one? 

  • Just want to stress that the distance when you plot a route in Garmin Connect is never accurate. The map data simply does not have a small turns and twist the real road has. This is especially obvious with trails such as mountain biking trails. So I would never expect the recorded distance to be exactly what the course length is. Also real life roads are a 3D thing with ups and downs. The connect website I doubt takes that into account. With the Edge it is tricky. The 130 has no barometer and no idea of altitude so it plots a flat recording i.e neglect any elevation gain/lost. The 1030 has that sensor built-in and may (I am not 100% sure what it does with it). So even with GPS distance is never super accurate to the meter especially on hilly terrain - the device tends to flatten the distance if it lacks elevation data. Hence the relevance of the question from Blake since a speed sensor if very well calibrated can get a more precise distance because it will factor any ondulation of the terrain. Conclusion: measuring distance is not at all that simple and different devices will get different results...

  • Yeah the wheel size is correct 700c x 25 setting is auto and is reading 2103

  • Effective wheel diameter depends on the specific tire and the tire pressure, not only it's rating since diameter varies for a same rating. In theory auto calibration would computer a precise diameter that takes that into account. How effective it is I don't really know. Probably more than precise enough for what we need.
