Navigation issues

When I am on a course, if I am going to a dead end, most of the time the garmin device will say off course, then say make a u-turn, then finally it will adjust and be on route again.  This getting back on course may take a while to fix itself even though I am on the course.  The navigation works much better than in the past but still needs enhancements to clean it up.  I also think that garmin needs to add pausing the course if you go off course like it is added to the 1030 plus.  This may prevent these messages when stopping for a break.

  • Are you fully dependent on your device for navigation? Or, is this just an annoyance?  I definitely fall in the latter category.

    Sometimes I will not follow the track exactly as built, as I return to the course, I get weird errors also.  For instance, if at the point I rejoin the course, I need to turn right, it'll have me turn left to go back to the point of departure, I guess because I don't have the device set to auto recalculate. Also, if I lose satellites, say in a tunnel, it says I am off course, and of course (pun intended) it wants me to U-turn to go to the point of departure, and will continue to do so for a short period of time 200-400m after it regains satellite connection and I am on course, but it doesn't acknowledge so...then it does.

    I know a lot of folks get upset that the navigation of the device behaves like this...but unlike a car, where all navigation is being performed point-to-point, we are using the devices to do loops, one way, out and back, etc., tours, and I just don't think the nav programming knows how to contend with all these types of routes. S, it is programmed to keep you on course, and if you leave the course, return to the point from where you left the course. It could be better, but then if it was great for one, it might be abysmal for all others.

  • The navigation works better if you keep an eye on the map. If you rely on the prompts, you will have issues.

    Doing that, it's fairly easy to see where you are relative to the track line.

    The devices can have trouble with out-and-back segments. It seems worse if those lead to a u-turn.

    Dachs is correct that these are typically used differently than car devices. Road type and distance are also much more critical for cycling than for driving (cars can use highways and don't care if a route is a couple of miles longer).

    I usually I ride with screen 1 active (numbers) and tbt prompted bellow ,

    You have to deal with the reality you have. Not the one you want.

    It's easy enough to miss the notifications.

    The device doesn't always provide notifications when it should.

    Keeping an eye on the map provides a backup for both these cases. 

    Lots of people don't use the map. That's their choice but if the navigation gets complicated, they might be better off looking at the map.

  • It is really more of an annoyance.  When I am back on course I would like the garmin device to  re-adjust faster because i am on the course but it can take some time for the turn by turn to start working again
