Start/Stop broken on Komoot IQ app with Firmware 7.00 and other rants

Firstly, if Garmin have confidence in their firmware, why do they disable comments when the update releases are posted in the forums?

Since Firmware 7.00 I have been unable to use the start/stop/lap buttons when following a route on the Komoot IQ app.  The buttons beep when pressed but has no effect on the device controls.  This means I am unable to end the navigation at the end of the ride or even turn the Edge 530 off.  The only way is to hold down the power button and do a hard reset.  Mercifully, the ride data is still there and I am then able to save the ride.  But this is totally unacceptable for what is a mature device.

As a workaround, I tried starting the Komoot navigation and doing a hard reset at the start of the ride.  This does indeed bring back the start/stop button functionality.  But although the navigation route is still visible on the map - and even Climb Pro and sharp turn warnings still work, the navigation information does not and I am left with a 'Do a U-turn' message for the duration of the ride.

As a side note, when Garmin released the 1030 Plus they promised the re-routing features on that device would become available on the x30 devices 'later in the year'.  25 days until the end of the year and still no sign.  The current re-routing on the Edge 530 is limited to 'Do a U-turn' and is not fit for purpose.

I have exactly the same with Strava routes in IQ on 1030. any help?

  • I'm not sure why this appeared in the 1030 section and I thought I had deleted it.  But I feel your pain.  There are similar threads elsewhere on the forums, they suggest that the IQ apps may need an update.  There will be no help until either that or the next firmware update fixes the problem.

mmm ok, will have to wait then, but i see that a classic "courses" navigation with uploaded GPX does work! so will have to stick with that for while then. Thanks

  • I have the same problem with my edge 1030+

When I follow a route done with strava route IQ I can't use the start/stop button to register my course.

I have to press during 10 second the power button and a sceen appear "connect IQ is open .Close the app before putting the device to sleep or powering off.

You can see that on the picture.

Have you got a solution ?

    .

  • Looks like the exact same problem with Strava IQ as Komoot IQ has.  Garmin have unleashed beta software on the general public.  All you can do is keep holding the power button down until the device powers down.  If you are lucky, you will be able to recover your ride data on the restart.

There is no real solution other than wait for Garmin to release yet another update. But firmware 7.00 was released 21 days ago and Garmin have still not bothered to address the problem - or even respond to any of the threads on the forums about this issue.

So I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix.

  • I have the same issues since I use the GArmin Edge 1030 Plus. It seems that this problem only occures when you start the navigation out of the komoot IQ app on your garmin.

    This is my workaround:

    1. make sure you have WIFI or mobile connection
    2. open the Komoot IQ App on your Edge
    3. select the course you want to navigate
    4. make sure that it is offline available
    5. then get back to the home screen of your Edge
    6. start Garmin navigation (not in the Komoot IQ App)
    7. follow the menu: Courses -> Saved Courses
    8. select the course you want to ride and start navigation.

Following the steps listed above, my "START/STOP" button seems to work as usual and as it worked on my former 830.

You can leave a comment when it also worked for you or if you found a better solution.

  • There is a bug with launching courses from IQ apps (launching from IQ widgets works fine). It's an issue with IQ (not the individual apps).

I reported the bug some months ago.

The work around is to not launch the course from the app.

Instead, load the course from the course list (like any other course).

  • Thanks. I’ve already been using that workaround.  But that is my point - this is a workaround.

This has been a known issue for over four months now.  I’ve raised tickets with both Garmin support and Komoot support, as have many others.

They blame each other for the fault.  I couldn’t care less who is to blame, but four months without a fix for key navigational functionality isn’t acceptable, Covid or not.  If they offer a feature, they should support it.  If they no longer offer a feature then they should remove it.  Don’t just leave it hanging there, useless.

I also asked Garmin when they expected to release the improvements to re-routing on x30 devices  - which currently comprises of ‘do a u-turn’ - an upgrade they promised by the end of 2020 when they released the 1030 Plus during that summer.  They seriously suggested that I should submit this as a feature request, despite this being entirely their own idea.

This is why I will be moving to Wahoo as soon as they update the Roam.  No company is perfect but I’ve never come across such levels of incompetence when it comes to the software and support of electronic devices.

  • Thank you for the answer. I also just found out that there is another way to download courses on your device without the IQ App. Meanwhile you can show all Komoot courses in your Garmin connect account and then sync them directly with your device.

As you say (and what I also have written in my description), once you have the courses on your Edge, it is important NOT to start navigation with the IQ App.

  • Yes, I totally agree, so sad that you have to use workarounds for this. Hope that they will uplate the Software soon and release several bug fixes.
