Quality problems with Garmin Edge devices

Hello,

I've been using a number of Garmin Edge GPS bike computers for a number of years.

Unfortunately, I keep finding quality problems in various series.

On the Garmin Edge 1000, the on and off switch on 2 devices was slipped after around 2.5 years.
The rubber around the small microswitch was torn (due to normal switching on and off), so that the devices could no longer be switched on or off.

I reported this to Garmin and after a few back and forth I bought two new Garmin Edge 1030s at a discount. But were still over 800 euros.

Now, after I have had the 1030s again for around 2.5 years, a nose on the underside of the housing (coupling) has broken on both devices and that without outside interference.
They are used to attach the Garmin to a bracket on the bike.
The white plastic is just too thin and the material too soft.
Modern bikes are made of carbon these days and the vibrations are constant. If you then ride an MTB off-road, that can break one of the white noses in the long run. There is even a tool that can be used to achieve a better connection to the bracket.

Why is there such a thing and why can't Garmin implement it?
If you could just swap the clutch here, that would be a few cents. The circular coupling in the post can also be loosened and replaced with two screws.

But no, you have to send in the device and get - generously - a refurbished device for around 140 € and have to replace it completely!

Is there anyone who has had a similar experience? At least I'm not the only one in the Google world!

In any case, I'm really angry and if it stays that way, I won't buy any more Garmin devices.

  • I did have a 1030 after about a year the battery swelled so much that the screen popped out.  I had it replaced and I have this one working for about a two years.  The issue I have had with Garmin is that the software ecosystem around the 1030 is flaky.  For while LIve Tracking was spotty, comms between Phone and 1030 edge were not reliable.  Also it appears that they have given up support on the varia turn signal lights, which are a great feature at night.

  • The connection part with the tabs on the Hammerhead Karoo is replacible (it's attached with a screw).

  • The fact that the 1030 have power pins in the attachment make replacement more complicated. But I agree it would be nice if it was replaceable. That being said I never broke one and I use Edge devices a lot. I only use genuine Garmin mounts and stay far away from any of the fancy aftermarket mounts made of metal like K-Edge and the others. You want to Edge to have the strongest material, not the mount.

You can try this hack here which may work for you. www.youtube.com/watch

  • The tabs breaking is a fairly common problem.

The power pins do make it complicated to replace it.

  • Same with my Edge Explore.

The 'ears' broke. I contacted Garmin and the only solution was to buy a 'replacement' (read: refurbished, old) device for 120 euros. I can buy a new one from 180 euros. They refuse to fix it. Well, they will, and then sell it to another user as a replacement...

Garmin customer support is awfull. This is all over the net. Eventually they will break. Garmin knows. Instead of using aluminium part instead of plastic (cost? €1?) they keep using this issue to make more money. My last Garmin. It's not like it's a cheap device.

I much reather give my money to people like Wahoo who constantly update the device and do care about their users.

    Yes, I 'm angry ;-)

  • We have 2 Edge 1000’s, and one has the dreaded black spot.  One of our Varia headlights won’t turn on.  We have 3 Varia headlights, 3 Varia taillights, one radar, 1 Edge 500, 1 Edge 25, and 2 Edge 1000’s.  We are considering switching to Cycliq front and rear light/cameras and Wahoo Elements, sell off all the Garmin equipment.  Tired of pairing issues on multiple bikes, failures.

  • Look up issues with Cycliq.

  • Several friends have them, love them, but I’ll check.  Thanks.
