My Edge 1030 three times in the last few months has "crashed" when sleeping

I purchased a 1030 in April of this year. And several times, this happens:

I'm on a ride, and I pause for a breather/rest. I pause the ride pressing the lower-right button, and then I press the power button to put it in sleep mode.

After a few minutes, I press power again to resume the ride, and it never powers back on. I try pressing the power many times, try holding it for a few seconds, and it remains off and unresposive.

This has happened when the battery was at about 40%, yesterday it happened when it was 55%.

Then I feel like my device is either dead or the battery is a lemon and needs to be replaced.

But I just read on here, that this is called a device lock up and that holding the power button for 10 or 15 seconds will unlock it. And when I tried that, it worked and turned on again finally. I had it plugged in at the time too, thinking that charging it would wake it up. But charging did not wake it up or show any info until I pressed the power button for a while.

Is this a known bug? This lock up? Is it a feature? Any other posts or FAQs about this? It's not in the Garmin manual.

  • What firmware do you have, it happent to me also but few months ago

Can you check if you have BT and Wifi both open? Try to turn off Wifi

  • I have firmware v10.20.

I always keep wifi off and only turn on bluetooth for phone paring temporarily at the end of rides to sync my strava and then turn it back off.

  • but that is the issue of that firmware!

Upgrade or downgrade but dont stay on 10.20

  • Oh wow. This is a known issue? Are there other posts on here about the same thing? Or is this mentioned in the release notes?

I do see the version 11.00 just announced. Going to try upgrading to it :)

  • Yes :)

    Please do so

  • I've not seen any posts with this issue, but 10.20 was wildly unstable...in certain conditions for me. I'll describe my issues in a second...but, first, I upgraded to 11.00 earlier this week, and the issue is gone, so far.

My similar lock up issue occurred when I did this:

In my office, I would power on the device (without a satellite lock, so no GPS). Since my commutes home double up as workouts, I'd load up the prescribed workout, then double tap the screen and then press the home icon, go into routes and load up my preferred route (I ride the same roads, but I mix up the sequence based on the length of time my workout requires), and press ride to get the device calculating my route. I'd change and walk out of the office to the bike, and all would be good...and then, it'd find the satellites, and power off. Not every day, but 3 out of 5...

So I changed my routine a bit, troubleshot, discovered in my case it had something to do with having a route loaded before the GPS fix was established. I was able to work around this by waiting to load my route until I had a GPS fix, but this meant riding off without the navigation fully functional for sometimes up to 5 minutes.

On 11.00 now...and for a week no issues. I tested for this straight away, and all has been well.

  • My advice is to not fiddle with the device while recording a ride. I never ever turn it off to sleep when I stop. I very rarely use the pause button. I however make use of auto-pause in several profiles, but not all. Going to sleep require that all sensors reconnect and it is just looking for trouble. Whey do it in the first place ? The battery barely drain when you stop and you should have plenty of juice in that device anyway. Anyhow the easy workaround is to quit that habby of putting the device to sleep in the middle of activities and you will then be a much happier person. Cheers.

  • I can understand and appreciate your logic. It's just that if Garmin developed their devices as they they operate, there would be no problem. Garmin in this case, according to your logic, should add your note in their own manual.

Regardless, I will be not be putting my Edge to sleep during rides anymore :)
