1030 to Earth

I'm very seriously considering purchasing either a 1030 or a 1030+.

Seems my question is the opposite of most here. I like examining my ride tracks using Google Earth on a Win10 laptop. Currently I download from my eTrex 30x using Basecamp, then export the track as GPX and open it in Google Earth.

Can I do the same with a 1030? A different procedure is fine; I don't need the GPX files except for the transfer, and the Basecamp database is just a backup. TCX, KML, KMZ would all work fine, and there are probably others. I just want to be able to see the track in Earth, including letting Earth compute the elevataion gain (though I know it overestimates).

I tried a Wahoo Roam and ended up returning it. The only procedure Wahoo support could give me was to download a FIT file and convert it using some website. Plus Wahoo seems to only believe in Workouts, never Rides, and I'm a tourer, not a racer. But I digress.

Can it?

Thanks,

Edward

  • The Edges produce FIT files. It's easy enough to view the files in Earth. You just have to convert them. There are converter programs that you can install on you PC. BaseCamp will do it. Another option is GPSBabel.

I wrote two programs for Windows that makes it more convenient.

One is a "file manager" for Garmins (GRouteLoader). Its easy to open the files from that in Google Earth. And BaseCamp. And GPXSee.

Another is BC2GE, which does the same thing but with more options. (BC2GE works as an "add on" of sorts to GRouteLoader and BaseCamp.)

    sites.google.com/.../grouteloader

These both use GPSBabel (so you have to install that too).

  • from that point of view either will do the trick, if you find it at good price go for 1030

if the prices are similar or the diference is small, go for 1030+

all the garmin devices allow you to copy fit files from device to your pc

  • Yes. The 1030+ is significantly better. (The 1030 is still fine.)

  • My Gamin 1030 was replaced due to blue halo issue ,I have received another Garmin 1030 that feels a little bit faster than the previous one(maybe is in my head?) , also ,I can rotate the map with two fingers, so definitely is another type of display

So overall I am very happy with my 1030

  • The map rotation feature was probably added in a firmware release.

  • You can view your rides in Garmin Connect which will also let you save an activity in Google Earth format.

  • Ridewithgps has the same options. One can sync their rides to that too.

It shouldn't be any harder with the Wahoo units. And, I believe the files the Wahoo produces aren't much different than the Garmin FIT files.

  • Thanks for all the replies -- very encouraging. Seems there's various routes to what I like. I found a 1030 for $417, no sales tax, and have ordered it. Did not find the 1030+ for under $599, though I did not try real hard. Seems most are saying that with the firmware upgrades, the 1030 is real close to the 1030+.

Of course I'll have to experiment when I get it to make sure I'm happy. Obviously there's knowledgeable people here, and I also see lots of Youtube videos about setting up a 1030 -- important given Garmin's reluctance to provide user-friendly guides for their products.

    Cheers!

  • The 1030 is very nice. $417 is a good price for it.

  • Till now I used Basecamp 4.6.2 and had to reinstall always the older Google Earth 7.3.2 before I got a view of my routes in BC. The other day GE updated and needed a reinstallation...

With BC2GE it's much easier I only have to convert my route to a track which I copy with BC2GE to GE.

Thanks for the very helpful little tool.
