can I get audio prompts through bluetooth earbuds

The Garmin Edge 1030 with Varia are truly a great combo. I would expect to be able to get audio prompts through my wireless earbuds. When cycling with several people, it's annoying to have different beeps going off, and it's distracting to other cyclists. Presently when cycling in groups, I turn off the audio prompts to avoid distracting other cyclists.
Is there a solution when Varia detects traffic I get the audio through my wireless earbuds?

  • Can't be done. I'd like the feature too.

  • With the RTL515 you could. The RTl515 has BLE support that will pair with a companion phone app. If you then pair your phone with your earbuds then you will get the notifications via the earbuds. Not quite what you wanted, but would give traffic alerts via your earbuds.

The RTL515 can pair both over ANT/BLE at the same time so you can still have the visual cues on the Edge.

Thanks for the update. I'm downloading the app and pairing tonight, and will it on a ride tomorrow morning

  • I had forgotten about the new Varia which has Bluetooth. Unfortunately the older 510 Varia can't do this solution.

Let us know how it works out.

I just verified I have the older 510 so this will take a little longer to check out

  • I looked into transmitting the alert to a earbud with the 510 model and there is no simple way to do it. I'm a old guy and my hearing is very poor. To solve the alert to a earbud problem, I combined a very small bluetooth transmitter and a microphone that attaches to the bottom of the out front mount. It works surprising well but it adds more complexity to my setup than I care to deal with. It is very nice to be able to hear the alerts but I've learned that I notice when the 1030 screen changes to red when a car approaches.

  • One question about varia functionality

Is it possibe to disable notiffication on edge screen but still to have back light changing flash pattern when the car is approaching?

  • I think if you disable the Varia on the 1030, then the Varia should still flash when a car is approaching. I'll try it today.

  • Super, and also tell me if the setting is profile configurable

I am seeing the logic for radar, i have used when i ride with a friend on the country ride

But when i ride in the city i dont see the logic to see on the display all the cars, beeping over and over again ,but still the radar do the job to change the pattern of the light Slight smile

  • The varia appears to work entirely independent of a connection to the 1030. It does it's multiple flashes when a car approaches. I suppose the only way to stop the radar display using the1030 would be to disconnect it through the sensor menu. It's easy to have it reconnect when needed.
