Field “Target Power” empty after FW 10.0

For my training I use structured workouts that I download from TrainingPeaks with the 1030.

I do not use the standard workout page, but instead use the other workout fields in a normal data page.

Fields I use: Step, Time to Go, Target Power, etc.

Since the update to FW 10.0 the field Target Power remains empty.

The standard workout page does show the correct range!

It looks like a bug, I have tried older workouts that are already on the 1030 device, but the Target Power field remains empty.

Has someone reported this to the development team already ?

  • Thank you. Yes, looks like the same issue. Already reported.

The workaround mentioned in that discussion is not working for me. Far too much different targets per workout.

Hope this issue will be solved in the next FW release.

  • How do you set the workout targets? Usually the zones or targets have either a min or max value. The Edge will then set the middle of the two values, e.g. Min is 80W, Max 120W, Edge will then set 100W.

If you prefer a fixed value, I'd just enter the same value in both fields or at least reduce the gap between them if edge refuses the first method. I guess this should make Edge set your desired value.

  • I am using Trainingpeaks to define workouts. In TP you can enter a range or target power. The target power is defined as a percentage of FTP. This way the workouts automatically follow FTP changes.

On the Garmin 1030 there is a Trainingpeaks 'app' that you can start. It will retrieve the workout for today and you can start it.

Because my coach makes the workouts, I do not know by heart the different targets for the different steps. For a training with a few steps it is easy, but otherwise it is undoable.

I have the same problem and reported this to Garmin. They have just come back with this response after chasing them again: "The Target Power data screen is nested in the indoor trainer section of the data screen selection menu and is intended to display the power value that a connected indoor trainer in ERG mode is forcing the user to exert. Any functionality outside of that was not by design and has been removed. The recommended data field for viewing the workout target is the Target field in the Workouts section of the data screen selection menu."

Given I've been using the target power field for on road structured workouts for years this is an incredibly frustrating response.

  • I fully agree. The field 'Target' under workout shows a range and not a target. And the range is shown in very small format, so it is difficult to see when cycling.

Fortunately I can tell you I have built a solution for devices of which the firmware supports CIQ 3.2 (and the workout options within that).

For my 1030 with (beta) firmware 10.25 I have built a super-simple datafield app that just shows the target value.

It works and does exactly what the old field did: it shows one target number in the right size.

I only finished it 10 minutes ago.

  • Can you share this field? Surely it could use a lot of people ;)

  • I have just now uploaded the app to the Connect IQ store. It is now pending approval.

The name of the app is

    Target Power

Please mind that the app only works (gives you a target power value) if the firmware of the device supports CIQ 3.2 and the workout access within CIQ 3.2. For the Edge 530, 830, 1030 and 1030 Plus you currently need to have the beta firmware loaded. For the Forerunner 945 and Edge 130 Plus it should work with normal firmware.

Please report if you use it, because I have only been able to test it with workouts that come from TrainingPeaks to the Garmin Schedule.

    Enjoy training!

  • App has been approved.

In case you use it, please leave me a note whether or not it works for you.

    Happy training,

    Sirfive

  • It works, thank you! I will let my friends know, they will be grateful;)
