Virtual Partner V10.00

v10.00 seems to have ruined the Virtual Partner feature. Whenever I go off course, the Virtual Partner is reset when I return to the course. I've fished through the menus and can't find a way to alter this behavior.

  • What is virtual partner, this should be removed 10 years ago

  • Virtual Partner NEVER worked correct, it uses a wrong formula something with average speed and GPS.
It is wrong and therefore useless!
You should notice it if you ride over the top of a mountain where the speed differs much in a short time.
The correct formula has to use the GPX File instead.
It's like a spectator on the wayside with a stopwatch.
    Timediff at Point = t(real) - t(virtual) or
    Waydiff  at Time = s(real) - s(virtual)

  • I don't use the "built-in" Virtual Partner. I route with plotaroute where I can set parameters for horizontal and vertical speed. The resulting TCX file is (until yesterday) extremely useful in keeping me honest on long rides.

  • Virtual Partner NEVER worked correct, it uses a wrong formula

That's not necessarily true. If you follow a previously recorded activity as a course, the VP does not use a formula, but moves exactly according to the previously recorded timestamps. Uphill slower, downhill faster - just like you were riding before. It is therefore a useful function if you follow your own courses again and again for training purposes.

  • @VirtualDynamo you are right: Virtual Partner makes a reset when going off course. That can happen because of any small roadwork.
    It is annyoing!

  • @mcinner1 if you don't believe that the Virtual Partner shows completely wrong values, you should verify that!
Take the original fit file from the virtual parnter,
    go to fitfiletools.com
    use "Time Adjuster"
enter the start time of your activity
Upload the new fitfile to Strava
and compare your Virtual Partner as Flyby!
"Time Ahead" is a wonderful line in Strava and has NEVER any equality to Garmins values.
Does anyone knows what Garmin is calculating?

  • I just did this with my 2020JUL05 activity using a 10 minute differential and the time ahead IS A CONSTANT 10 minutes. Note that I never use auto pause.
