location sharing? how to...

I shall ask this couple days earlier, I have maybe a chance to figure it out tomorrow?

In the morning we are heading out for a "family trip" to Niagara Falls, with that in my mind that they will let me out of car somewhere half way and me to bike some 4-5+ hours to a meeting/pickup point.

I know how to use the "share location" in google maps but remember catching something similar naming in Edge1030. Would that be the Edge syncing location through a cellphone or the other party shall have garmin as well? Maybe too late for tomorrow but I would like to educate myself for next time...

I will be literally "somewhere out there" and not really want to miss a pickup timing and location hundreds of Km away from home ;) Yes, the cellphone is with me but in the frame bag, not convenient to stop and call/elaborate how far I may be out...

  • I think you are referring to Group Tracking but that requires two Garmin devices and I think the distance is limited to 30 miles.

  • Use the livetrack feature , it will email a link to webpage where you can be tracked.

  • I just got home from a trip, I had a nice 53Km ride in the unknown and got a pickup on time, the google maps location sharing worked well. But my wife told me there were some delays of about maybe 5 minutes how the dot moved on the map (me progressing on predefined course). Next time I need to try that Group Tracking, I am assuming these two programs were made with different purpose?

  • Grouptrack is for location sharing between Garmin units.

livetrack is for sharing location with individuals/ non garmin users.

  • I thought that you needed to monitor your wife's location and she needed to monitor your location. If only she needs your location, then Live Tracking as others have said is the best solution. It's still easier to use cell phones if you can work that out.

  • I like longer ranges cycling, me 60 and taking my time and mostly on gravel and trails. Nobody in family doesn't want to join me (and I would not have patience listening every five to ten minutes some winding), and my friends from work they like asphalt more.

Usually my son drops me of somewhere on the map and the goal is to pedal home. The location sharing is mainly for emergency backup, like last week the Temp jumped to 36C (but that is in shade I believe) and I ran out of drink, some remote trail/road not even a gas station close by. That ride to get home was brutal. This trip yesterday was again 4 hours away from home, wife kept the car and me had a fun time biking around Niagara Falls ;)

Anyways, I fully trust some sort of live tracking or location sharing everybody shall use if going for longer or remote trips.
